Abstract: Apparatus for successively inflating a bag with gas from a plurality of sources disposed in a vehicle subject to a plurality of collisions occurring in short intervals. Upon initial impact of the vehicle, an electrical current is directed from a power source to a primary gas source. Gas released from the primary gas source upon receipt of the electrical current passes into the bag which inflates to protect occupants or other mobile objects within the vehicle. Upon a second impact of the vehicle, the electrical current is directed from the power source to a secondary gas source, which operates in the same manner as the primary gas source to reinflate the bag. Additional gas sources may similarly be provided to accommodate subsequent impacts.

Abstract: Apparatus for transmitting an electrical current from a power supply to a gas source during a time interval which varies in inverse proportion to the impact velocity of a vehicle in which the apparatus is disposed. A portion of the gas is released from the gas source upon receipt of the electrical pulse. Another portion of the gas is released from the source independently of the pulse. The released gas passes into a bag, which inflates during a time interval determined by the impact velocity of the vehicle, thereby serving to protect occupants or other mobile objects within the vehicle.

Abstract: A vehicle safety system comprising an inflatable safety restraint assembly for positioning about a person, a source of pressurized gas, a sensing element adapted to actuating the source of pressurized gas which in turn inflates the safety restraint, a source of electrical energy and electrical conductors connecting the components. The system is operational only when the safety restraint assembly is positioned about the person and the vehicle is subjected to abnormal conditions which tend to violently displace the person from his seat.
