Abstract: A fire-retardant foamable latex carpet backing can be produced using large particles of alpha alumina-trihydrate which have been ground to a median particle size of about 6-35 microns and subsequently treated with sufficient water at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to prevent collapse of the subsequent fire-retardant foam latex.
