    Abstract: Apparatus for determining the partial pressure of a paramagnetic gas in a gas mixture, comprising: an elongated C-shaped magnet for generating a plane of high-magnetic flux density over a relatively large rectangular area, and a region of low-flux density at short distances from such plane; and a test body in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped having dimensions approximately equal to the size of the rectangular area and the distance between the plane of high-flux density and the region of low-flux density. Means are provided for pivotally mounting the test body with one surface thereof aligned with the rectangular area and an opposite surface aligned with the region of low-flux density, the test body being mounted for movement in a direction perpendicular to the plane of high-magnetic flux density.

    Abstract: Phase and amplitude balance adjustment are provided for a gas analyzer of the type in which two infrared beams are generated, one passed through a cell containing a standard and the other through a cell containing a sample gas, constituents in which are to be detected and measured; and there is a detector which compares the energy absorption in the two cells to provide a measure of the gas content. In this type of gas detector there is a chopper consisting of a rotating shutter with two sectors which rotate in front of two apertures through which infrared beams are transmitted from two different infrared beam generators. Phase adjustment is accomplished mechanically by physically moving a mounting plate carrying the two infrared beam generators with respect to the position of the apertures. Amplitude balance adjustment is accomplished by adjusting the relative electrical energy supplied to the two infrared beam generators.

    Abstract: An optical bench having a gas flow cell with an infrared source at one end and an infrared sensor at the other end is provided with an attachment or ''''piggyback'''' for determining the concentration of a second constituent or pollutant in a sample. The attachment comprises a sensor inserted into the gas cell adjacent to the end toward the infrared source so that a beam of radiant energy falls directly upon the inserted sensor. The invention is particularly well suited for determining the concentration of a pollutant which occurs in greater concentration or is more highly absorptive of radiant energy than that of the pollutant for which the optical bench was originally designed.

    Abstract: A sensor unit is provided for selective detection of one or another of gaseous pollutants by response to absorption of infrared radiation by the pollutant to be detected. The unit contains a pair of thermistor elements mounted back to back in a housing having two opposite windows, in each of which filters are mounted. These filters are selective for the different radiation absorption characteristics of two different gaseous pollutants such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Each thermistor is behind a different filter. The unit is rotatable to expose one filter window or the other to radiation passing through the sample containing the pollutant to be measured. A shield is provided to shade the filter window which is not to be exposed to radiation.
