Abstract: A turbocharger includes a compressor housing, a turbo shaft, a bearing housing, a bearing cartridge, and a spacer. The compressor housing includes a backplate. The turbo shaft extends through the backplate and the bearing housing, and is rotatable about an axis. The backplate is positioned between an interior of the compressor housing and an interior of the bearing housing. The bearing cartridge is positioned in the bearing housing and rotatably supports the turbo shaft therein. The spacer is engaged with the bearing housing and an outer radial portion of the bearing cartridge to prevent rotation therebetween. The spacer includes a deflector formed integrally therewith that directs a lubricant axially away from the compressor housing.

Abstract: A bearing housing assembly includes a bearing housing and a bearing assembly. The housing extends along an axis and has a cross-bore surface defining a cross-bore to receive lubricant and a feed groove surface defining a feed groove. The feed groove surface has a constant radial portion extending circumferentially about a majority of the axis with a first groove radius that is constant and an expanded radial portion extending from the constant radial portion circumferentially about the axis with a second groove radius larger than the first groove radius. The bearing housing also has an interior surface having an interior radius smaller than the first groove radius and defining an interior. The bearing assembly is disposed in the interior and includes an outer race having a receiving groove surface defining a receiving groove, an inner race, and a rolling element disposed between the outer race and the inner race.

Abstract: A turbocharger includes a turbine housing defining a turbine housing interior, a turbine wheel disposed in the turbine housing interior, a compressor housing defining a compressor housing interior, a compressor wheel disposed in the compressor housing interior, and a shaft coupled to the compressor wheel and the turbine wheel. The turbocharger also includes a bearing housing assembly including a bearing housing defining a bearing housing interior, and an anti-rotation assembly. The anti-rotation assembly includes a bearing assembly disposed in the bearing housing interior, an anti-rotation spacer disposed in the bearing housing interior and about the shaft, and a retaining ring disposed about the shaft and coupled to the anti-rotation spacer to axially retain the anti-rotation spacer in the bearing housing interior. The anti-rotation spacer has an engagement member engageable with the retaining ring and configured to limit rotation of the retaining ring relative to the anti-rotation spacer.

Abstract: A method of balancing turbocharger rotating assembly (50) includes installing a shaft-and-turbine wheel subassembly (40) into a ball bearing cartridge (20) within a bearing housing (8) of a turbocharger (1), connecting a compressor wheel (5) to the shaft (6), and testing the balance of the turbocharger rotating assembly (50) while the turbocharger rotating assembly (50) is installed within the bearing housing (8) of the turbocharger (1). Based on the results of the balance testing, material is removed from the turbine wheel (4) while the shaft-and-turbine wheel subassembly (40) is installed within the bearing housing (8) of the turbocharger (1). The step of removing the material from the turbine wheel (4) comprises removing material from a peripheral edge (35) of a backwall (34) of the turbine wheel (4).
