Abstract: The present storm drain filter comprises a tubular housing with a solid vertical surrounding wall and sized for being recessed inside a storm drain. The housing is supported in the drain by a flange around its top edge. A tubular cartridge is detachably attached to a solid annular bottom plate of the housing. The cartridge comprises a solid annular top cover coaxial with a solid annular bottom closure; vertical tubular inner, intermediate, and outer screens concentrically connected between the top cover and bottom closure; and filter media enclosed between the screens. A central overflow opening inside the inner screen is aligned with a hole on the bottom plate of the housing. An annular debris trough is defined between the cartridge and the housing. Debris flowing into the filter is collected in the trough. As the level of debris rises and obstructs the lower part of the outer screen, the unobstructed upper part of the outer screen continues to filter the water. The vertical outer screen is tall enough to provide a large area which will take a long time to obstruct. When the screens or media are completely clogged, water will continue to flow by passing through the central overflow opening. A handle on the cartridge is used to lift or lower the entire filter in the drain. The top cover on the cartridge is removable for changing the media.

Abstract: A street curb drain filter is comprised of U-shaped brackets for attaching to an inside wall of a street curb drain adjacent an inlet. A horizontal retaining bar is attached to the outer ends of the brackets. The lower edge of a horizontally elongated flexible net is attached to the retaining bar. The upper edge of the net is connected to the interior ceiling of the drain with eye bolts and S-hooks. A horizontally elongated debris basin is supported within the brackets. A filter media pack is positioned inside the basin adjacent a perforated outer wall of the basin. Water flowing from the street into the drain is directed through the filter. When runoff is relatively light, debris flowing into the drain is collected inside the basin. When runoff is relatively heavy or when the basin is clogged, debris bypassing the basin is filtered by the net.

Abstract: A runoff drain filter is comprised of a tray for being supported inside a runoff drain. A plurality of separately removable cartridges are supported by the tray and aligned with holes in the tray. Each cartridge is comprised of a bucket and an insert. The insert is comprised of a central overflow tube centered in the bucket by a vented annular top plate and an annular bottom plate. Runoff pouring into the tray is directed into each bucket through the vented annular top plate. The runoff is filtered by a perforated tube which is part of the central overflow tube before it is discharged through an open bottom of the central overflow tube. Debris and contaminants are collected in the buckets. The total capacity of the filter is divided among the separately removable cartridges to enable a filled cartridge to be more easily lifted by an average person.

Abstract: A storm drain filter is sized to cover the opening of a storm drain. It includes a top debris tray removably positioned within a bottom media tray. Each tray includes a peripheral trough surrounding a central overflow opening. The top tray is shorter in height than the bottom tray, so that a filter media receiving chamber is defined between the top tray and the bottom tray. Filter media is positioned in the filter media receiving chamber. A handle is attached across the central overflow opening of the top tray. In a first embodiment, the bottom surfaces of the top and bottom trays are perforated. In a second embodiment, the inner walls of the top and bottom trays are perforated. In either embodiment, water flowing into the filter is distributed around the top trough, passed through the perforated surface of the top tray, the filter media, the perforated surface of the bottom tray, and into the storm drain. Hydrocarbons and other contaminants are filtered by the filter media. Large particles and debris are collected in the trough of the top tray. The filter may be easily cleaned by lifting out the top tray, shaking out the debris, and replacing it in the bottom tray. The removable top tray also enables easy inspection or replacement of the filter media.
