An uncooled infrared imager and associated microelectromechanical infrared detectors based on an active pixel heat balancing technique are disclosed. The imager is fabricated using a commercial CMOS process plus a simple electrochemical etch stop releasing step. The basic active pixel detector structure consists of a simple cascode CMOS amplifier in which the PMOS devices are built inside a thermally-isolated floating n-well. The intrinsic coupling of the cascode currents with the self-heating of the well forms an electrothermal feedback loop that tends to maintain the well temperature constant. By employing the heat balance between incoming infrared radiation and the PMOS device power dissipation, the responsivity of the detector is controlled by the cascode biasing current.

Adverse effects to laser excitation ratio slope caused for example by ambient temperature maybe compensated for by adjusting drive current to the laser. The real time excitation ratio slope may be determined by dithering the code word by +/−1 least significant bit (LSB) of a digital-to-analog drive current source (DAC). A slight variation in laser output power caused by the dither may be detected and used to calculate in real time the laser excitation ratio slope. This may be used to select a drive current to compensate for ambient changes keeping the excitation ratio slope substantially constant.

Embodiments introduce redundant optical channels to significantly extend the lifetime of parallel optical transceivers. A plurality of transmitters, N, transmit on a plurality of optical channels, where N is an integer number of optical channels greater than 1. One or more redundant channels, M, are also provided. N+M multiple input shift registers provide multiple paths for signals from each of the transmitters to connect to N+M laser diodes. In the event up to M of the N+M laser diodes fail, the multiple input shift registers connect the N transmitters to functioning ones of the N+M laser diodes thus extending the life of the device. A corresponding scheme is also described for the receiver side.

The first port (P1″) of the MCCs is connected to the first MIM capacitor. The fourth port (P4″) of the MCCs is connected to the second MIM capacitor.
