A printing machine comprises an X-Y table (50) for moving a substrate (30) with respect to a print head (20). During a printing process, the substrate (30) is moved, whereas the print head (20) is intermittently activated to fire ink droplets. A camera (25) is arranged for providing images of the substrate (30) to a computer which is programmed to recognize patterns. In order for the print head (20) to be able to print a spot at a predetermined position on the substrate (30), an offset between a predetermined and an actual mutual position of the substrate (30) and the print head (20) is measured and compensated for. For the purpose of measuring this offset, a test spot (38) is printed on the substrate (30) and an offset between a predetermined and an actually obtained position of this test spot (38) is measured by means of pattern recognition.

A device such as a flexible LCD is described comprising first and second layers wherein the first layer is a flexible substrate and the second layer is a brittle ITO conduction line applied to the substrate. The ITO layer is substantially flat and meanders across the plane of the flexible substrate so as to prevent fracture of the ITO layer when the flexible substrate is deformed. The ITO layer may be subdivided into portions, the length of the portions being selected to prevent fracture when the flexible substrate is deformed to a predetermined radius of curvature.

A machine (1) is equipped for printing a pattern on a substrate (20). The machine (1) comprises a table (10) for supporting and moving the substrate (20), and a print head (30) for firing ink droplets towards the substrate (20). Further, the machine (1) comprises a cover plate (40) which is arranged such as to encompass the print head (30), wherein the print head (30) partly extends through a hole in the cover plate (40). During a printing process, evaporation of solvent which is part of the ink droplets starts as soon as the ink droplets land on the substrate (20). The presence of the cover plate (40) has an equalizing effect on the evaporation rate over the printed pattern. As a result, a height distribution of all printed elements of the pattern is within predetermined limits, once the elements have dried up.

Holes (5) extend through the spacers (4) and the substrates (2, 3) and thus form through holes (5) extending through the display panel (1) making it permeable to gases and/or liquids. The substrates (2, 3) and the spacer (4) form the wall (6) of the respective through hole (5) and thus a space (7) can be sealed between the two substrates (2, 3) without any risk of leakage.

The aerosolized material having a unipolar charge in the deposition chamber experiences an electrostatic force of controlled magnitude that is directed (preferably antigravitationally) towards the substrate surface by means of an (externally) applied electrostatic field.
