    Abstract: wherein X is oxygen or sulfur and R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl, are useful as plant growth regulators when administered to plants in association with a carrier. The compounds are prepared by reaction of the 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid chloride with phosphorus pentasulfide to form 2chloroethylphosphonothioic acid chloride and reaction of this material with water to form the acid, hydrogen sulfide to form the trithioic acid, and reaction with an alcohol or thioalcohol to form the esters.
