In a projection lens, there are arranged in order from a screen side, a first lens group including a meniscus lens having a convex lens surface in a central portion toward a screen with refracting power, a second lens group including a lens having a convex lens surface in a central portion toward a video generating source, a third lens group including a lens having convex lens surfaces in both sides with positive refracting power, a fourth lens group including a lens having a convex lens surface in a central portion toward the video generating source with positive refracting power, and a fifth lens group including a lens having a concave lens surface toward the screen with negative refracting power. An entrance pupil is arranged between incident and emitting surfaces of a power lens.

An inexpensive projection lens unit in a rear projection type image display system, having a short focal distance (wide angle of viewing field), high focus and high contrast, and as well, including a power lens made of a glass material having a high refractive index in a range from 1.63 to 1.70 and an Abbe's number of not less than 50 with an optimized incident and emergent configuration in order to satisfactorily correct aberration with a enhanced focusing performance even with a shortened focal distance. Further, the power lens having a high refractive index can exhibit a high power, and accordingly, can carry out satisfactory aberration correction by optimizing the aspheric degree of a plastic lens even though the length of back focus is increased for enhancing the contrast.

For a projection lens apparatus having a six-group structure that enlarges and projects an image displayed on a projection tube, an appropriate distance is maintained between a power lens and an aspherical lens group that is located near a power lens on the image generation source side, and physical interference with the power lens is eliminated, so that productivity is increased while a cost reduction is achieved. A meniscus lens that has a concave face directed toward a screen and has a refracting power is employed as an aberration correction lens (fourth group lens 4) that is located near the power lens (third group lens 3) on the image generation source side. Further, the lens surface of the meniscus lens on the screen side has an aspherical shape, so that a curvature is increased from the light axis to a predetermined point located between the light axis and the outer edge, and is reduced from the predetermined point to the outer edge. Furthermore, an inexpensive low refractive index material that has an Abbe number (νd) of 57 or higher and a refractive index (nd) of 1.500 or lower and that has superior flowability is employed as the base material for the fourth group lens that is located nearest the glass power lens on the image generation source side.

A projection lens apparatus includes a plurality of lenses, for enlarging and projecting, onto a screen, an original image displayed on an image generation source. The plurality of lenses are arranged, beginning with the lens nearest the screen, as first to sixth lens groups. The fourth lens group includes one meniscus lens that has a positive refracting power and has a concave lens surface directed toward the screen. The concave lens surface of the meniscus lens included in the fourth group lens has a curvature in the vicinity of an outer portion of the concave lens surface that is smaller than a curvature in a predetermined area of the concave lens surface defined between a light axis of the concave lens surface of the meniscus lens and the smaller curvature of the concave lens surface in the vicinity of the outer portion of the concave lens surface.

There is provided a projection image display apparatus which is excellent in quality of a display screen image even if a projection lens using a plastic lens having an asymmetrical shape with respect to an optical axis is used. The apparatus includes a projection lens which obliquely projects video light on a screen, an integrator which aligns a polarization direction of light from a light source, and an image display element (P, PL) which modulates light having the aligned polarization direction by an image signal. The projection lens includes multiple plastic lenses, and each of the multiple plastic lenses is arrayed, respectively, by shifting a gate direction to each other by 180 degrees. When the projection lens includes n sheets (n is a natural number) of plastic lenses, each of the multiple plastic lenses may be arrayed, respectively, by shifting a gate direction to each other by (360/n) degrees.

An optical projection apparatus includes an optical lighting system provided with a polarized beam splitter for polarizing white light flux from a white light source and combining the white light flux with other light fluxes, thereby taking out a predetermined polarized wave; a multi-lens array consisting of a plurality of lens elements; and an irradiator for separating the white light flux into three primary color light fluxes of red, green, and blue and irradiating each of the three color light fluxes on the same display element at an angle different from the others; and a projecting lens unit used for projecting the three primary color light fluxes modulated by the display element. Color light fluxes modulated by the display element are separated in a horizontal direction of the screen of the display element when passing an injection pupil of the projection lens unit.
