Abstract: A backlight includes: a light guide plate including a front surface and a back surface, the light guide plate including an end face that connects one edge of the front surface and one edge of the back surface, at least part of the end face being inclined at an angle other than a right angle relative to the front surface; and a light source that emits light, the light source being set in an arrangement enabling emission of the light parallel to the front surface towards the at least part of the end face of the light guide plate, wherein the light is incident on and refracted at the at least part of the end face, propagates inside a material of the light guide plate, is reflected off the back surface, and is surface-emitted from the front surface.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, an illumination device includes a first light guide including a first main surface, a second main surface, a first side surface and a second side surface, a first light source and a first layer including a first prism provided on the second side surface.
