    Abstract: An optical device includes a first waveguide, having parallel first and second faces and parallel third and fourth faces forming a rectangular cross-section, that guides light by four-fold internal reflection and is associated with a coupling-out configuration that couples light out of the first waveguide into a second waveguide. The first or second face is subdivided into first and second regions having different optical characteristics. The optical device also includes a coupling-in configuration having a surface that transmits light into the first waveguide. The surface is deployed in association with a portion of the third or fourth face adjoining the second region such that an edge associated with the surface trims an input collimated image in a first dimension, and a boundary between the first and second regions trims the input collimated image in a second dimension to produce a trimmed collimated image that advances by four-fold internal reflection.

    Abstract: An image projection system includes a cascaded waveguide system including a first waveguide and a second waveguide arranged downstream along a transmission path from the first waveguide. The first waveguide includes a first output structure and is configured to receive a light beam having a first beam width and output a first expanded light beam at the first output structure, wherein the first expanded light beam has a second beam width greater than the first beam width. The second waveguide includes a second output structure and is configured to receive the first expanded light beam from the first waveguide and output the first expanded light beam multiple times from the second output structure as a plurality of output light beams. Each of the plurality of output light beams is output from a different area of the second output structure along a propagation direction of the second waveguide.

    Abstract: The present application relates to a backlight module and a display device. The backlight module includes a light source, a light guide plate, and a diffusion film; the light guide plate includes a light guide incident surface facing the light source and a light guide emergent surface facing a light emitting direction, a peripheral edge of the light guide emergent surface is a refractive surface, and a distance from an outer edge of the refractive surface to the light guide incident surface is longer than a distance from an inner edge of the refractive surface to the light guide incident surface; and the diffusion film includes a diffusion incident surface and a diffusion emergent surface, and a shape of the diffusion incident surface is fitted to a shape of the light guide emergent surface. The direction and strength distribution of an emitting light path can be changed, and light leakage caused by ray overflow from a backplane due to ray concentration on the edge can be reduced. Moreover, by such a design, restrictions on a sealing strip and a border shading function can be eliminated, and technical support for “borderlessness” can be provided.

    Abstract: A luminaire module includes light-emitting elements (LEEs) arranged to provide light; a light guide including a receiving end and an opposing end, the receiving end arranged to receive light provided by the LEEs, a core including a first transparent material with a first refractive index, the core having a pair of opposing side surfaces extending along a length of the light guide between the receiving and opposing ends, and a cladding including a second material having a second smaller refractive index, the cladding extending across and being in contact with at least a portion of the opposing side surfaces forming a cladding-core interface. The cladding-core interface is optically smooth. Additionally, the luminaire module includes an optical extractor arranged to receive guided light from the opposing end of the light guide and configured to output into the ambient environment at least some of the received guided light.

    Abstract: An optical aperture multiplier includes a first optical waveguide (10) having a rectangular cross-section and including partially reflecting surfaces (40) at an oblique angle to a direction of elongation of the waveguide. A second optical waveguide (20), also including partially reflecting surfaces (45) at an oblique angle, is optically coupled with the first optical waveguide (10). An image coupled into the first optical waveguide with an initial direction of propagation at an oblique coupling angle advances by four-fold internal reflection along the first optical waveguide, with a proportion of intensity of the image reflected at the partially reflecting surfaces so as to be coupled into the second optical waveguide, and then propagates through two-fold reflection within the second optical waveguide, with a proportion of intensity of the image reflected at the partially reflecting surfaces so as to be directed outwards from one of the parallel faces as a visible image.
