Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a display panel configured to modulate a first polarization component, a first viewing angle control panel including a first liquid crystal layer containing twisted liquid crystal molecules, a second viewing angle control panel including a second liquid crystal layer containing twisted liquid crystal molecules, and a polarization axis rotation element provided between the first viewing angle control panel and the display panel. A second polarization axis of a second polarization component which passed through the first viewing angle control panel is different from a first polarization axis of the first polarization component. The polarization axis rotation element is configured to rotate the second polarization axis.

Abstract: The purpose of the present invention is to realize a high contrast display with liquid crystal display device using a liquid crystal light valve. A representative structure is as follows. A liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel, a backlight, and a liquid crystal light valve; the light valve includes a plurality of first electrodes extending in a first direction and formed on the first substrate; a first insulating film is formed on the first electrode; a plurality of second electrodes are formed in a matrix at predetermined intervals on the first insulating film; a second insulating film is formed on the second electrodes; a plurality of third electrodes extending in a second direction are formed on the second insulating film; the liquid crystal is sandwiched between the third electrodes and the second substrate; the predetermined interval between the second electrodes is 2 to 10 μm.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display system includes an external light sensor, a display panel, a viewing angle control panel including a liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules twist-aligned, configured such that a drive voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer is controlled based on an external light intensity detected by the external light sensor, and a polarization axis rotation element disposed between the viewing angle control panel and the display panel. The drive voltage when the external light intensity is less than a threshold value is greater than the drive voltage when the external light intensity is greater or equal to than the threshold value.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first substrate with a first alignment film, a second substrate with a second alignment film, and a liquid crystal layer interposed therebetween. The first substrate has first and second electrodes. The second electrode includes comblike electrodes extending parallel to the first direction and a connecting portion which connects the comblike electrodes. Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first viewing angle control panel including a first liquid crystal molecule, a second viewing angle control panel including a second liquid crystal molecule, and a polarization axis rotating element. An initial alignment direction of the first liquid crystal molecule is substantially orthogonal to an initial alignment direction of the second liquid crystal molecule. A second polarization component transmitted through the first viewing angle control panel includes a second polarization axis. A third polarization component transmitted through the second viewing angle control panel includes a third polarization axis. The polarization axis rotating element rotates the third polarization axis to align the third polarization axis with the second polarization axis.

Abstract: According to an aspect, a display device has a first electrode, a second electrode and liquid crystal layer. When a voltage is not applied to the first and second electrodes, the major axes of the liquid crystal molecules are oriented in a third direction. When a voltage is applied between the first and second electrodes, the major axes are oriented so as to rise in a direction perpendicular to a first substrate while rotating clockwise in a vicinity of one of long sides of comb tooth portion that face each other and counterclockwise in a vicinity of the other of the long sides. An angle between an electrode base-side portion of a long side of each comb tooth portions and the third direction is larger than an angle between a distal end-side portion of the long side of each comb tooth portions and the third direction.
