A rotatable shaft carries a winding instrumentality whereby thread to be temporarily stored is coiled around a thread drum rotatably mounted on the shaft. Rotation of the thread drum in the direction of shaft rotation is prevented by concentric relatively fixed and movable brake elements, the fixed one secured to housing for the apparatus, the movable one coaxially secured to the thread drum. One of the brake elements has a circumferential surface from which elongated resilient fingers project, the fingers being more or less radial to said surface and having their tips normally engaged under flexing bias against a circumferential braking surface on the other brake element. The thread passes through the zone of the fingers, and the several fingers are so inclined to radials from the common center of the brake elements that the thread, or a guide tube through which it extends, can flexingly cam each finger, in turn, out of engagement with the braking surface and pass around the finger.

A transport device is provided which is driven by an electromotor and on which more than two bobbin supports are mounted and are movable in common such that the respective bobbin to be unwound can be brought into the required association with respect to a stationary thread eye. A thread scanning device is provided adjacent the unwound thread for detecting the thread as it jumps from the bobbin just emptied to the next bobbin. This thread scanning device is connected with the electromotor such that, when the thread scanning device responds, the motor moves the transport device to such an extent that the next bobbin is brought into the required association with respect to the stationary thread eye.

In a loom having a weft thread supply spool at each side thereof and a shuttle whereby thread from each spool is alternately carried across the shed as a U-shaped loop, improved thread guide elements, one on each end of the batten, are actuated in consequence of movement of the batten through each of its reversal positions, at one of which the batten engages the last-laid weft thread to beat up the same and at the other of which the batten begins its return for another beating-up while the shuttle moves through the shed. Each thread guide element comprises a member mounted on the batten for bodily movement therewith and for rocking movement relative thereto. Each such member rocks between a first position wherein a thread eye thereon is located to dispose weft thread extending from its adjacent spool across the shuttle path and a second position wherein the thread eye holds the thread clear of that path. Each member is rocked to its first position upon movement of the batten through its said one reversal position and to its second position upon movement of the batten through its said other reversal position. Rocking is imparted either by the inertia of a weight on the member, due to acceleration and deceleration of the batten incident to reversal of its motion, or by a friction or magnetic retarding device connected between the member and the loom frame.

A weft thread carrier is disclosed for a loom with a weft thread supply at each side thereof and wherein the carrier, just before entering the shed, engages a weft thread segment that it draws into a loop while moving in the shed. Each weft thread segment extends across the carrier path obliquely to that path, from its supply through a fixed thread eye to the selvedge. The carrier has a hook projecting towards each of its ends, each capable of catching a weft thread segment, but it also has a deflecting surface for each hook, so arranged in relation to its hook that it deflects a thread segment away from the hook if the segment is at one oblique angle to the carrier path but permits the hook to engage a segment at the opposite oblique angle. Hence, as the carrier emerges from each side of the shed it merely deflects the thread segment across its path, but in moving towards the shed its then-forward hook engages the same segment.
