    摘要： A method of automatically determining an attached device type for a multi-port LAN switch, and configuring the port based on the attached device type is provided. The method comprises setting a LAN switch port to a port mode, and determining, during a first period of time, whether an attached device is attempting to insert at the LAN switch port. If the attached device is attempting to insert during this first period of time, the method continues by configuring the LAN switch port in the port mode. If the attached device is not attempting to insert during the first period of time, the method continue by setting the LAN switch port in an adapter mode, transmitting a test frame to the attached device, and then determining, during a second period of time, whether a response frame is received from the attached device. If a response frame is received during the second period of time, the method further includes configuring the LAN switch port in the adapter mode.

    摘要： In a local area network switch, a first mode of operation is selected wherein frames are examined for errors as the frames are passed from a source port to a destination port. The LAN switch calculates an error rate as a function of a percentage of the frames passing through the local area network switch which have errors. In response to the error rate exceeding a high error rate threshold, the operating mode is switched to a second mode wherein the entire frame is buffered and examined for errors before the frame is passed from the source port to the destination port. Thereafter, the operating mode may be returned to the first mode if the error rate falls below a low error rate threshold. The local area network switch may also change operating modes as a function of a trend, which indicates a rate of increase or decrease of the error rate.

    摘要： An improved solution for limiting the transmission rate of data over a network is provided according to an aspect of the invention. In particular, the transmission rate for a port is limited by rate limiting one of a plurality of queues (e.g., class/quality of service queues) for the port, and directing all data (e.g., packets) for transmission through the port to the single rate limited queue. In this manner, the transmission rate for the port can be effectively limited to accommodate, for example, a lower transmission rate for a port on a destination node.

    摘要： A searchable information database is provided. At least one network processor having one or more packet processors is provided which are programmed to independently search for a match of any one of the keys in a key set which is delivered to the network processor(s). Each key set is independently identifiable and searchable. If a match is found, then either a function associated therewith or a pointer to the location of the information in the database is returned. Several searching techniques can be used. For example, multiple network processors can be used, with each storing the keys of a different set of keys, and each set of keys can be searched concomitantly in the network processors. Alternatively, a large lookup table may distribute multiple network processors. If a single network processor is used, the key sets can be pipeline searched, or pico processors or packet processors can independently search each key set.

    摘要： A method and system for controlling a plurality of pipes in a computer system including at least one central system is disclosed. The pipes provide traffic from a plurality of distributed systems. The method and system include providing a first plurality of data packets from a pipe of the plurality of pipes to a fast path or a slow path during a time interval such that none of the first plurality of data packets is dropped. The first plurality of data packets arrive in a time interval. The fast path includes a fast storage, while the slow path includes a bulk storage. The method and system also include providing a second plurality of data packets from the fast storage or the bulk storage to the central system in a first in first out order during the time interval.
