    Abstract: An illustrative example embodiment of an elevator system includes a cab configured to accommodate at least one passenger or item inside the cab. A motorized module includes a base, a connector supported on the base and at least one drive member supported on the base. The connector is configured to selectively establish a releasable connection between the motorized module and the cab. The drive member is configured to engage a vertical surface, climb along the vertical surface to selectively cause vertical movement of the base, and selectively prevent movement of the base when the drive member remains in a selected position relative to the vertical surface. At least one motor is associated with the drive member to selectively cause the drive member to climb along the vertical surface. The motorized module is vertically movable independent of the cab when the motorized module is released from the cab.

    Abstract: An elevator car of an elevator system includes a car body and a car frame supportive of the car body. The car frame includes two opposing side frames, each side frame formed from a plurality of side frame segments, including two upright members and one or more upright braces connecting the two upright members, adjacent side frame segments secured to each other via a joint. A method of installation of an elevator car of an elevator system includes positioning a first side frame segment of a plurality of side frame segments adjacent to second side frame segment of the plurality of side frame segments, and securing the first side frame segment to the second side frame segment via a splice joint thereby constructing a car frame of the elevator car. One or more car bodies are installed into the car frame.

The car frame includes two or more opposing upright assemblies, a crosshead assembly located above the car body, and a plank assembly located below the car body. A plurality of seismic retainers are located at each of the upright assemblies. The plurality of seismic retainers are configured for a non-contact relationship with a guide rail of the elevator system during normal operation of the elevator system, and configured to react guide rail loads during a sway event via contact with the guide rail.
