Novel polyviologen compounds useful in variable density lightfiltering devices are provided which have repeating units (in oxidized dicationic form) represented by the formula: WHEREIN R1 is propylene or a straight-chain alkylene group having from six to 12 carbon atoms; R2 is -H or a hydrocarbon group having from one to six carbon atoms; Z is a bivalent radical resulting from the removal of both active halogen atoms from an aromatic dihalide or from an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid dihalide having a straight four to eight carbon alkylene chain between terminal carboxylic acid halide groups; and X is an anion.

THIS INVENTION RELATES TO PHENOL PHTHALEIN INDICATOR DYES CONTAINING AS THE RING-CLOSING MOIETY, A NAPHTHALIDE GROUP OR A CARBOXYPHTHALIDE GROUP POSSESSING A CARBOXY SUBSTITUENT IN EITHER THE 4- AND/OR 7-POSITION OF THE PHTHALIDE RING. IN A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT, THE PHENOL RADICALS ARE SUBSTITUTED WITH A HYDROGEN-BONDING GROUP ON A CARBON ATOM ADJACENT TO THE CARBON ATOM CONTAINING THE PHENOLIC -OH. This invention relates to a class of indicator dyes useful as optical filter agents in photographic processes to protect a selectively exposed photosensitive material from further exposure during processing in the presence of incident light. Such dyes comprise 3,3-disubstituted 6-sulfonamido naphthalides wherein the 3,3 substituents are p-hydroxynaphthyl radicals.
