摘要:
Solid N-phosphonomethylglycine or glyphosate acid is charged to a substantially closed system and then partially pre-dried as by continuously recirculating it through a hot air grinding/drying system. A cooled solution of ammonium hydroxide is then metered into and reacted with the partially dried glyphosate acid as it is being recirculated in a manner such that the moisture content of the reaction mass so formed is continuously decreased throughout the reaction. Following completion of the ammonium hydroxide addition, a powdered reaction mass/product having a moisture content of about 2 wt. % is formed. Significantly, at this stage, the ammonium glyphosate product is suitable for end use and it can be readily dissolved in water and immediately used as a herbicide or plant growth regulator. More importantly, however, this product is capable due to its highly sorptive character to be further formulated into a product exceptionally highly loaded with adjuvants and particularly surfactants.

Solid N-phosphonomethylglycine or glyphosate acid in "wet cake" form is charged to a suitable mixer/reactor. A stoichiometric equivalent of anhydrous ammonia gas is fed to the mixer for direct reaction with the glyphosate acid as it is agitated within the mixer. A water Jacket containing circulating water or other suitable heat transfer facilitating means readily known to those in the art is adapted to the mixer and used to remove heat from the reactor produced by the exothermic reaction. The moisture content of the glyphosate wet cake, the design of the mixer including a preferred close tolerance relation between the inner walls of the reactor and its mixing impellers together with the relative location of the ammonia gas inlet in the mixer/reactor and maintenance of a reaction temperature of about 60.degree. C. or below are all important process variables. The ammonium glyphosate thereby produced is a highly sorptive, water-soluble powder suitable for end use as a plant growth regulator or as a herbicide without further processing. Due to the highly sorptive character of the reaction product, however, it is particularly well-suited for further formulation to absorb/adsorb an exceptionally high level of adjuvants such as wetting agents, anti-foaming agents and, in particular, surfactants.

A composition for application to foliage of a plant to elicit a biological effect is provided. This plant treatment composition comprises, dissolved or dispersed in water, an anionic exogenous chemical substance such as the herbicide N-phosphonomethylglycine, together with (i) one or more alkylether surfactants each having the formula R12—O—(CH2CH2O)n((CHR)2O)m—R13 wherein R12 is an aliphatic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbyl group having about 16 to about 22 carbon atoms, n is an average number of about 5 to about 100, m is an average number of 0 to about 5, one R in each —((CHR)2O)— group is hydrogen and the other R is methyl, and R13 is a hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl or C2-4 acyl group; and (ii) one or more amine surfactants each having a molecular structure that comprises (a) a hydrophobic moiety having one or a plurality of independently saturated or unsaturated, branched or unbranched, aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic C3-20 hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbylene groups joined together by 0 to about 7 ether linkages and having in total about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms, and (b) a hydrophilic moiety comprising an amino group that is cationic or that can be protonated to become cationic, having attached directly thereto 1 to 3 oxyethylene groups or polyoxyethylene chains, these oxyethylene groups and polyoxyethylene chains comprising on average 1 to about 50 oxyethylene units per surfactant molecule, the hydrophobic moiety being attached either to the amino group or via an ether linkage to an oxyethylene unit. The weight ratio of the alkylether surfactant(s) to the amine surfactant(s) is about 1:10 to about 10:1; and the alkylether and amine surfactants are present in total in an adjuvant amount of about 0.05 to about 0.5 parts by weight per part by weight of the anionic exogenous chemical substance, expressed as acid equivalent. Also provided are solid and liquid concentrate compositions that can be diluted, dissolved or dispersed in water to form such a plant treatment composition.

Compositions of exogenous chemicals, particularly phloem-mobile exogenous chemicals, are provided for treatment of plants, wherein the composition comprises the exogenous chemical and an enhancing agent consisting of an anthraquinone or substituted anthraquinone. Specific compositions contain herbicides, particularly N-phosphonomethylglycine and herbicidal derivatives thereof, i.e., glyphosate. The compositions exhibit enhanced effectiveness compared to compositions in which the enhancing agent is not present. Also provided are processes for applying an exogenous chemical with an anthraquinone or substituted anthraquinone enhancing agent to achieve enhanced biological effectiveness.

A composition is disclosed for application to a plant that comprises glyphosate, an aqueous diluent, and an excipient substance that is amphiphilic. The weight/weight ratio of the excipient substance to the exogenous chemical is between about 1:3 and about 1:100. The aqueous composition forms anisotropic aggregates on a wax layer, and the presence of the anisotropic aggregates can be detected by a test described herein. Compositions of the present invention, when applied to plants, provide enhanced biological activity per unit amount of glyphosate, as compared to otherwise similar compositions containing surfactants that do not form anisotropic aggregates. Without being bound by theory, it is presently believed that this enhanced biological activity results from the formation or enlargement of hydrophilic channels through the epicuticular wax of the plant.

There is provided a concentrate composition, suitable for foliar application to a plant to elicit a biological activity therein, comprising (a) about 20% to about 90% by weight of a plant treatment compound that is an acid having a solubility in deionized water at 25° C. of less than about 50 g/l and is present predominantly in the acid form, and (b) a surfactant of formula R—O—(CH2CH2O)n—H wherein R is a straight or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbyl group having about 24 to about 60 carbon atoms and n is an integer having an average value of about 5 to about 100. The weight ratio of the surfactant to the plant treatment compound is about 1:2 to about 1:30. In a particular embodiment, the composition is a liquid suspension concentrate having a continuous aqueous phase and a discontinuous particulate phase comprised predominantly of the plant treatment compound. The plant treatment compound can be a herbicide, for example glyphosate.
