Abstract: In a first embodiment, a picture is taken of the traveling wire cable in a stationary position at intervals that are equal to the ratio produced from the lay length or a multiple of the lay length and the travel speed of the wire cable, at least op one lay length or the above-mentioned multiple of the lay length, and the successive images are compared on at least one lay length or the above-mentioned multiple of the lay length and are monitored for changes in the image which are indicative of damages. In a second embodiment, the wire cable is instead of taking pictures exposed to flashes and the exposed image is detected on at least one lay length or the above-mentioned multiple of the lay length and monitored for changes in the image. Preferably, the respective repetition of the same outer stranded wire of the traveling wire cable is detected in the same location and every repetition or every other repetition or every third repetition is used for triggering the taking of a picture or for triggering the flash. In a third embodiment, a picture is taken of a large portion of the wire cable using a specialized camera and the image is split up into recurring units of length that correspond to the size of a lay length or a multiple of the lay length and the successive units of length are compared and inspected for changes in the image.

Abstract: A wire rope, particularly a non-twistable wire rope, wherein an annulus of outer strands surrounds a wire rope center with a central strand and one or more annuli of neighboring strands surrounding the central strand. The wires of the strands in the center do not intersect each other. The entire center or at least some of its strands are densified prior to or during application of the outer strands. Alternatively, or in addition to such densification, at least some strands of the center are assembled of wires having an other than circular outline to thereby reduce the combined cross-sectional area of voids in the center.

Abstract: The invention relates to a wire cable (12) which is produced by producing the wires already in the cable configuration by layer construction. Preferably, the wires are already formed onto terminal couplings. The wire cable (12) so produced is suitable for specific purposes only. It is advantageous in that it is not influenced by variations in quality of the starting product or by variations in manufacturing parameters. The inventive wire cable (12) is used for applications where short cables are required and where their absolute regularity can be made use of. An important field of application of the inventive method is the production of samples for obtaining background data required for optimizing wire cable construction. According to the inventive method, samples of identical basic cable structure but different wire diameters and/or lay lengths of strands, a core wire and/or the cable are produced and the characteristic features of interest are determined. In the tests, different absolute values are found. However, the values in relation to each other show influences of geometry, i.e. wire diameters and lay length modifications. A comparison with samples produced according to conventional manufacturing methods can be used to find correctional variables which can be taken into consideration when required.

Abstract: It is a known practice to hammer cables for specific applications that require a smooth surface for the cable. Notches in the cable and breaks that soon arise as a result of said notches are accepted. To prevent cable damage of this type, an intermediate layer consisting of a thermoplastic plastic is applied to the core cable or core strand prior to the stranding process and the outer strand layer is pressed into the heated plastic during said stranding process. It has been demonstrated that this type of support for the outer strands does not impair the hammering process or the desired deformation. Notches in intersecting cable strands do not occur. The plastic intermediate layer acts in a similar manner to a sealed liquid, in which the pressure prevails on all sides, resisting the hammer blows that impact simultaneously from different sides and preventing increased forces from being produced between the intersecting cable strands. A cable comprising a core consisting of a plastic strand can also be hammered if necessary in such a manner.

Abstract: A swivel for use in a crane has a stationary upper member which is secured to the boom and a lower member which is rotatable relative to the upper member and is connected with the end of the cable. The cable is looped beneath the swivel and the bight of its loop carries a roll which supports the load. A driving unit is provided to positively rotate the lower member of the swivel when the cable portions flanking the roll beneath the swivel tend to cross each other. The driving unit is of the self-locking type or the lower member of the swivel can be braked to prevent a change in its angular position independently of the driving unit. If such independent change of angular position of the lower member is desired, the machine employs a load-responsive clutch which disengages the lower member from the driving unit in the absence of load upon the roll.
