A fly fishing reel comprises a large diameter spool having a broad width and a shallow line storage depth. The reel may have an arm-like body and a unique mounting member which, when attached to a fishing rod, positions the perimeter of the spool across a longitudinal axis of the rod. In an additional aspect, a drag mechanism is provided in a center hub of the spool. The drag mechanism is a unidirectional dual cone drag mechanism. The drag mechanism comprises a pair of opposing frictional conical race members, an inner race member inserted into an outer race member. The race members are biased into contact to create drag on the rotating spool. A roller clutch is utilized to produce a unidirectional drag mechanism. The roller clutch is configured to lock thereby causing relative rotation of the race members creating frictional drag only when the spool is rotated in the "reeling out direction." In another aspect, the roller clutch may be carried by a reversible clutch ring which detachably couples to one of the race members. The clutch ring is reversible thereby allowing the reel to be converted between left hand wind and right hand wind by simple reversing the clutch ring.

In one aspect, the invention includes a lockable, rotatable rotor having a pair of diametrical positioned ear assemblies extending from its base, a central cylindrical housing and at its interior, a hollow pinion gear in rotational contact with the central cylindrical housing. A tension responsive fishing apparatus is provided which includes a pole member having an interior. The interior of the pole member is filled with a variable viscosity fluid, such as, electrical rheological fluid, magnetic-powder dispersed fluid, or the like. A controlled potential may be applied to the variable viscosity fluid which causes the variable viscosity fluid to vary in viscosity dependent on the amount of potential applied thereacross. In other words, depending on the amount of potential applied to the variable viscosity fluid disposed in the interior of the pole member, the flexure of the pole member may be selectively varied from extremes of high flexibility to high rigidity. An improved reel member is provided which varies a resistance applied to a bobbin member which is effected to control the release of fishing line. The varying resistance is controlled in response to input signals inputted dependent on tension sensed in the fishing line and/or a value selected by a user. The varying resistance means may be comprised of a friction plate disposed between two electrodes and surrounded by a variable viscosity fluid. The resistance varied in response to a controlled potential applied through the electrodes. In accordance with the present invention, a tension responsive fishing apparatus is provided for automatically setting a hook when a fish strikes. Tension is sensed in the fishing line during a fish strike and triggers a hook setting operation. The fishing line is conveyed in a direction effective to set the hook.

Disclosed is a drag control device in a spinning type fishing reel which includes a reel body and a spool shaft extending through the reel body. The drag control device comprises a hollow cylindrical member, a drag control screw, a click spring member and a stop member. The hollow cylindrical member extends from a rear portion of the reel body and is disposed over the spool shaft. The drag control screw has one end portion threadingly engaged with the hollow cylindrical member, an intermediate portion formed with the stepped portion, and the other end portion formed with indentations at an outer peripheral surface thereof. The hollow cylindrical member is formed with a groove at its outer peripheral surface and a through hole extending in radial direction thereof. The click spring member is fitted with the groove and engageable with the indentations. The stop member is provided to the click spring member and extends through the through-hole into the stepped portion.

A fishing reel whereby when the crank handle is actuated in direction for reeling in the fishing line drawing-up, the handle shaft is directly coupled with a line spooling or winding member or a rotor to forcedly reel in the fishing line, and when the handle is turned in the opposite direction, the handle shaft acts to frictionally keep the spooling member or rotor against rotation to allow play-out of the fishing line, and whereby, in addition to the above-said, when the handle shaft is in a mode tending to turn in the line reeling-in direction, backward rotation of the spooling member or rotor can be checked to prevent unnecessary play-out of the fishing line even if the angler does hold the handle with his hand, thus allowing the angling operation only with a simple handle manipulation and also providing great versatility in use of fishing reels regardless of the condition of the fishing places or the fishing manners used by the angler.
