摘要: A measurement system permits environmental, corrosion damage, and mechanical property measurements to assess protection properties of coatings. The system includes one or more multi-sensor panels, each multi-sensor panel having sensors for assessing coating barrier properties, free corrosion, and galvanic corrosion. Each multi-sensor panel is installed on a test rack that contains electronics for sensor excitation and sensor data acquisition throughout a corrosion test. Sensor data is collected, stored, and communicated to a base station. A network of multiple test racks can be supported by a base station to compare the performance of different coatings and material combinations simultaneously. The test racks can be used in accelerated atmospheric corrosion tests, outdoor test sites, or application service environments. Measurements of the capacity of a coating to maintain barrier properties, prevent free corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and environment-assisted cracking can be used to develop, select, and predict service performance of coatings.

摘要: A method for evaluating the corrosion-fatigue life of a steel material includes: bringing a corrosive medium into contact with a predetermined portion of the steel material; measuring strain on the steel material while applying cyclic loads to the steel material; measuring an N-th strain index from strain amplitude at the number of initial load applications and strain amplitude at the N-th load application (N is a natural number larger than the number of initial load applications); and estimating the corrosion-fatigue life of the steel material by comparing the N-th strain index with a previously certified life strain index.

摘要: Inspecting for fracture hazards by detecting a presence of at least one flaw development process in an equipment under inspection, the flaw development process being corrosion product nucleation and development, pitting, plastic deformation development, and/or micro-cracking. Detecting the presence of the flaw development process includes (a) determining at least one characteristic acoustic emission (AE) signature associated with a respective flaw development process, and (b) measuring an AE from each of a plurality of locations within the equipment. Presence of the respective flaw development process is identified only when the measured AE conforms to the characteristic AE signature within a predetermined tolerance. A fracture hazard is determined to exist only when (a) a quantity of the identified flaw development processes exceeds a first predetermined threshold and/or (b) a magnitude of at least one of the identified flaw development processes exceeds a second predetermined threshold.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for detecting the onset of stress corrosion cracking are described. In one aspect, the present invention is a passive detector for in-situ detection of the onset of stress corrosion cracking in a nuclear reactor. The detector includes a ceramic insulator mounting member. A first material sample and a second material sample are secured to the mounting member. In the one embodiment, a metal bolt extends through the first and second material samples and secures the samples to the mounting member. The first material sample is cold worked to induce residual tensile stress and the second material is not cold worked. A first electrical conductor is electrically connected to the first material sample and a second electrical conductor is electrically connected to the second material sample. An electrometer is electrically connected to the first and second electrical conductors, and the electrometer is configured to generate a strain induced differential potential signal representative of a difference in potential between the first sample and the second sample. Alternatively, a strain induced differential current signal can be monitored using a zero resistance ammeter in place of the electrometer. The detector configured to be located within the reactor at the location where monitoring is desired, and during the reactor operation, if transients are observed in the differential signal, this condition indicates that at the location of the detector, an inspection should be performed at the next outage to determine whether cracking is occurring. Active detectors, detection methods, and test apparatus also are described.
