A TACAN beacon is disclosed in which the pulse-modulated carrier signal generated in a transmitter is applied to the elements of a circular antenna array through controllable phase shifters that generate 15-Hz and 135-Hz sidebands through, switches, and through a Butler matrix. A switching facility generates two states. In the first state, the phase shifters are controlled to generate the upper and lower 15-Hz sidebands and the upper 135-Hz sideband, respectively. In the second state, they are controlled to form the respective opposite sidebands.The Butler matrix generates, radio-frequency phase-rotation fields at the antenna. In the two states, the ordinal numbers of the radio-frequency phase-rotation fields differ in their signs. The absolute value of the largest ordinal number is smaller than or equal to six, and the sum of the absolute values of the ordinal numbers for the carrier signal and the upper or lower 135-Hz sideband is equal to 9.

A circuit generates RF signals for electronically scanned antennas and in particular for TACAN systems. The circuit includes a phase shifter that is particularly suitable for use in generating these RF signals. Instead of using circuits including a large Butler-matrix, a small Butler-matrix having only a few outputs is used for combining a limited number of outputs of a power divider. By further combining the remaining outputs of the power divider with the few outputs of the Butler-matrix by the use of electromagnetic combiners, a plurality of RF signals that are suitable for use by electronically scanned antennas are obtained from the circuit which is comparatively simple in structure yet produces very accurately controlled RF signals.

An antenna feed for a TACAN circular array. A power divider divides a source of radio frequency signals into zero, first and ninth order mode signals. A second power divider divides the zero mode input signal into a plurality of output signals each driving a pair of elements of the TACAN array. A second conventional matrix of radio frequency components receives the first and ninth mode excitation signals. A phase combining network combines the first and ninth mode signals so as to produce a plurality of signals each driving a pair of antenna elements. An output hybrid coupler combines the zero phase mode with the phase combined signals to produce the required TACAN azimuth antenna pattern.

A receiver for pulse amplitude modulated TACAN signals having 15 Hz and 135 Hz modulating components and which determines the TACAN bearing angle by calculating the phase shift angles .phi.15 and .phi.135 of those components of the received signals. The amplitudes of the received pulses and their times of arrival over a given time interval are stored in a memory. From such stored values a microprocessor determines the elements of a column vector Z defined by the pulse amplitudes and arrival times, and the elements of a matrix M defined by the arrival times. A column vector X corresponding to M.sup.-1.Z is calculated, the elements of which are trignometric functions of .phi.15 and .phi.135, from which those phase shift angles are determined. The TACAN bearing angle is then evaluated from the phase shift angles without requiring circuits to phase lock them with respect to each other.

A VOR monitor employs a microprocessor-based system in which, after initial analog detection of a transmitted VOR signal, the critical parameters of the signal are extracted by digital signal processing to ensure that the transmitted signal in space remains within tolerance. Initial processing to isolate the 30 Hz AM (variable) modulation component and the 30 Hz reference component is conducted in the time domain. The 30 Hz reference is recovered by FM quadrature demodulation which, as a by-product, yields data from which an rms calculation is made of the amplitude of the 9960 Hz subcarrier. Further digital processing is then conducted in the frequency domain to yield spectra from which critical parameters of the VOR signal are extracted, e.g. the phases of the 30 Hz components (determining azimuth), the modulation percentages of the 30 Hz variable and the 9960 Hz subcarrier, and the 9960 Hz FM deviation ratio. The identification tone of the transmitted VOR signal is recovered separately from the digital data by application of the Goertzel algorithm and verified by an autocorrelation analysis.

A stand-alone digital processor based system includes a five-output state digital filter provided with magnitude and time data relative to a received TACAN signal. Threshold detection is provided for validating the received signal magnitude. The filter outputs produce phase signals which are combined in the digital processor, in accordance with an algorithm, to generate bearing data. The bearing data is stored and scaled prior to updating a display.
