    摘要: A mechanical device for grasping an object includes a receiver having a distal end shaft with an internal bore, the internal bore defining a recessed track. The recessed track defines a curvilinear path having two sets of resting peaks, each set of resting peaks being at a different height relative to a centerline of the curvilinear path. An actuator is slidably engaged with the receiver and includes a central shaft and an activator disposed at a distal end portion of the central shaft. A rotatable sleeve is disposed within the internal bore of the receiver and is coupled to the actuator. The rotatable sleeve has opposed protrusions, the opposed protrusions being disposed within the recessed track of the receiver. A pilot is secured to a distal end portion of the receiver and a grasping device is mounted to the pilot and coupled to the activator.

The operation of the tool is completely mechanical and the telescoping feature enables the tool to have a relatively low profile when it is being moved and stored without housing a control rod assembly. Rigidly supported alignment cards guide a gripper that attaches to the control rod assembly as the control rod assembly is withdrawn into the tool with the alignment cards preventing any lateral or rotational movement of the gripper.

    摘要: A method of aligning a nuclear fuel bundle and handling selected fuel rods within the fuel bundle located in a spent fuel pool of a nuclear power plant. The bundle includes water rods, full-length and part-length fuel rods extending through a plurality of fuel spacers provided between top and bottom ends of the bundle, each spacer having a plurality of cells accommodating corresponding fuel and water rods. The method includes insertion of a rod grapple tool into a top end of a fuel bundle and down to a desired location within the bundle. A guide pin retrieval tool inserts into a side of the fuel bundle to remove a guide pin from a distal end of a gripper of the rod grapple tool, allowing the guide pin retrieval tool to grip a part-length fuel rod within the fuel bundle.

    摘要: An outer filter removal tool for a boiling water reactor control rod drive that uses a mechanical advantage obtained through the use of lead screw threads to pull the outer filter off of the control rod drive. Fingers on the tool are closed around the upper flange of the outer filter by sliding a collar over the outwardly biased fingers. A shaft extending through the tool is rotated which in turn extends a push plate against the control rod drive index tube causing the fingers to pull against the upper flange on the outer filter until the filter is freed from the control rod drive. The tool will hold the filter in place until affirmatively released for proper disposal.

    摘要: A control rod grasped by a hook of a grasping equipment is moved down and is positioned at an upper end of a hollow piston of a control rod drive mechanism (CRD) in a state that the control rod is fully withdrawn from a core. Furthermore, the hook is inserted into an opening of a handle of the control rod. The hook is lifted up so as to make contact with the handle. The control rod grasped by the grasping equipment is rotated by a grasping equipment rotation apparatus. A state that gaps formed between joint convexities in a coupling socket of the control rod are positioned right above coupling spud convexities of the hollow piston occurs. At this time, the control rod falls by its own weight and the coupling spud convexities pass through the gaps. A grasping equipment movement apparatus suppresses the falling speed of the control rod. The control rod is rotated at 90° and the control rod and CRD are connected. The time required for connecting the control rod and the hollow piston of the control rod drive mechanism can be shortened even further.

The system includes a bundle alignment system for aligning the fuel rods and water rods, a rod grapple tool to extract selected part-length rods from the bundle, and a fuel rod guide block slidable onto the top end of the bundle for protecting an uppermost fuel spacer of the bundle, and for aligning fuel rods within individual cells of all the fuel spacers in the fuel bundle.
