The coupling includes a first portion comprising a first material having a first density at room temperature, and a second portion comprising a second material having a second density at room temperature that is greater than the first density. In some embodiments the coupling includes a connecting rod including a hollow or partially hollow connecting rod tube comprising a first material having a first density and a filler disposed in the hollow or partially hollow connecting rod tube, the filler comprising a second material having a second density greater than the first density.

A control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) includes a lifting rod supporting a control rod and a holding mechanism comprising an electromagnetic circuit with magnetic poles drawn together when the electromagnetic circuit is energized to hold the lifting rod. The hold is released upon de-energizing the electromagnetic circuit. A translation mechanism linearly translates the lifting rod held by the holding mechanism. The holding mechanism may include a non-magnetic spacer between the magnetic poles that defines a gap between the drawn together magnetic poles. The translation mechanism may include latches configured to engage an upper end of the lifting rod, and the holding mechanism draws the magnetic poles together to hold the latches engaged with the upper end of the lifting rod. A four-bar cam assembly may be used to cam the latches closed in response to a vertical actuation force applied to the cam bars.

A method for producing a wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant stainless steel part for a nuclear reactor is provided. This method comprises steps of providing a blank in stainless steel; shaping the blank; finishing the blank to form the part in stainless steel, the finishing step allowing the prevented onset or the removal of work hardness on the outer surface of the part; hardening the outer surface of the part via diffusion of one or more atomic species.

A method is provided for operating a nuclear reactor. The method includes operating the nuclear reactor for an initial cycle during which a core contains initial nuclear fuel assemblies; then operating the nuclear reactor for transition cycles, at least some of the initial nuclear fuel assemblies being progressively replaced, during the replacement steps preceding the transition cycles, with transition nuclear fuel assemblies or with plutonium-equilibrium nuclear fuel assemblies; and then operating the nuclear reactor for at least one plutonium equilibrium cycle during which the core contains only plutonium-equilibrium nuclear fuel assemblies.

A control rod spider assembly connection between a connecting finger and a rodlet. An upper end plug of the rodlet is secured to the inner bore of the hollow connecting finger with a mating one of a right hand or left hand thread interfacing between the interior of the bore and the circumference of the rodlet. The upper end of the rodlet is captured by a second fastener mechanism having the other of the right hand or the left hand thread. The second fastener mechanism is anchored to one or both of the connecting finger or the upper end plug to secure the connection.

The invention concerns a control rod configured for a nuclear power light water reactor of the BWR or PWR kind. The control rod contains absorber material. At least 50%, with respect to weight, of the absorber material that is in the control rod is in the form of hafnium hydride. The invention also concerns the use of such a control rod during operation in a nuclear power light water reactor of the BWR or PWR kind.

A transfer device for moving a poison rod assembly between fuel cells in a nuclear fuel storage facility coupleable to an overhead crane. The poison rod assembly has a plurality of poison rods disposed in rows. The device includes an elongated outer member, an inner member, and a gripper assembly supported by the inner member. The inner member is slidably disposed within the elongated outer member. The overhead crane is coupled to the inner member for sliding said inner member between an upper position and a lower position. An interlock assembly selectively couples the inner member and elongated outer member. Thus, moving the crane, which is coupled to the inner member either moves the inner member relative to the elongated outer member when the interlock is not engaged, or, moves both the inner member and the elongated outer member when the interlock is engaged.

Internal equipments located above the core of a nuclear reactor have a bottom plate formed with outlet openings for the core coolant, a top plate, spacer columns interconnecting the plates, and guides for control clusters that are vertically displacable between a position in which they are in the core and a position in which they are out of the core. At least some guides each have a top length projecting above the top plate, and a bottom length extending between the plates and placed in a corresponding spacer column. Each cluster guide constitutes a cartridge insertable in a respective column, provided with a flange for fixing to the top plate and provided at its bottom end with springs for centering the guide within the column.

Internal equipments suitable for use in a nuclear reactor comprise a lower plate provided with openings for the coolant leaving the core, an upper plate, support columns connecting the plates together and guides for the vertically movable control clusters. Each guide has an upper section fixed to the upper plate and a lower section extending between the upper and lower plates. The lower section (32) comprises a base bearing on a frusto-conical seat fast with the lower plate and is subjected to the action of resilient means exerting a force pressing the base on the seat.

A nuclear reactor, such as advanced pressurized water reactor, with controlled power output includes a reactor core having a cross section in a given plane with a center of area and axes of symmetry passing through the center of area. A multiplicity of control elements are disposed in groups, each having at least one of the control elements. The control elements of each of the groups with more than one control element are joined together. The groups are symmetrical to at least two of the axes of symmetry. Drive mechanisms each move a respective one of the groups of control elements. Each of the control elements has a plurality of control rods. A support structure joins the control rods to one another. Fuel assemblies are disposed in groups. Each of the groups of control elements has a given number of control elements being associated with one of the groups of fuel assemblies having the given number of fuel assemblies. Other fuel assemblies with which the control elements are not associated surround the groups of fuel assemblies.
