Disclosed is a pressure switch that utilizes a dome switch having a flange surrounding the dome. The flange is anchored to a substrate such that the dome portion is in contact with a contact pad on the substrate. A pressure medium applied through passageways in the substrate flexes the dome in an elastic manner so that the dome does not contact the contact pad. When the pressure medium falls below a predetermined threshold level, the dome expands and contacts the contact pad to complete a circuit that indicates that the pressure of the pressure medium has fallen below the threshold level.

A snap-disk formation assembly and method provides feedback control of a snap-disk form station in communication with an exercise station and coupled to a feedback station. A disk blank is inserted into a pocket and loaded into a dial fixture which travels along a communication axis between the form station, the exercise station, and the feedback station. The pocket holds the metal disk while a snap-disk reset side and a trip side are formed and exercised. A feedback station determines actual snap forces for one or both sides of the disk and provides feedback control to the form station to bring successively formed disks within desired manufacturing tolerances.

A fluid pressure responsive electric switch (10) is shown having an elongated base (12) in which first and second terminals (34, 48) are mounted by dropping them into respective slots (26, 28). The terminals are provided with tabs (38, 52) to engage with a platform (30) of the base to limit motion in one direction and are in turn engaged by a guide member (62) to prevent motion in an opposite direction. The guide member (62) has a cylindrical force transfer portion (86) aligned with the weld portion (104) of a sensor assembly (92) to transfer force without adversely affecting the calibration of the sensor assembly. Electrical leads (118, 120) have connectors (126, 128) attached to an end thereof along with cylindrical gaskets (134) which form an interference fit in bores (22, 20) of the base to provide an environmental seal at the same time electrical connection is made to the terminals. In a modified embodiment a special thermal isolation fitting (140) is shown particularly adapted for use in sealed refrigeration applications.

A make-before-break pressure switch has a pair of snap-acting discs separated by a travelling spacer. At a low level switching pressure, the travelling spacer is moved by the pressure sensing diaphragm to snap one disc for moving a contact blade to close a pair of contacts. On increasing pressure, the second disc is snapped at a high level switching pressure to cause a blade spring to go over-center and effect snap actuation of the contact blade to re-open the contacts. Upon decreasing pressure reverse operation occurs; and, the over-center blade snaps the blade to close the contacts which remain closed until a low level opening pressure is reached.

A pressure responsive electrical switch uses precalibrated snap acting monometallic or bimetallic discs freely disposed in a disc seat formed on a base member. Over pressure protection in the form of a surface spaced just beyond the normal snapped position may be provided to avoid calibration changes. A flexible thin gasket is positioned over the disc and is sealed to the base by trapping between the base and a cap which is clamped to the base. Several seal variations are shown to provide varying degrees and types of seals. A rocker member having a specially curved surface rests on a movable contact arm and transfers motion from the disc to the movable arm. A support for the movable arm has a portion which is formed with a complementary curved portion which cooperates with the rocker member and a stationary contact to limit the amount of stress imparted to the movable contact arm. Several different embodiments of precalibrated disc switches are shown including a differential pressure switch and a switch in which the disc is part of the electrical circuit.

Plural snap-acting, pressure-responsive, metal diaphragms having dished portions which permit the diaphragms to move from one dished configuration to an inverted dished configuration with snap action are disposed in nested relation to each other in a pressure switch. When fluid pressures are applied to the nested diaphragms from one side thereof, the diaphragms retain their original dished configuration during variation of said fluid pressures over a selected pressure range. However, the diaphragms move together with snap action to their inverted dished configuration when said fluid pressures reach predetermined levels. The diaphragms have protective oxide surface coatings which prevent galling of one diaphragm by another during said snap-acting movement of the nested diaphragms whereby the diaphragms retain their pressure response characteristics over a long service life.
