Abstract:
A dual fuel injector for injecting liquid and/or gaseous fuel into a gas turbine engine includes a plurality of hollow spoke members for injecting gaseous fuel that are located upstream of a plurality of main air swirling vanes that are in turn upstream of a plurality of air-blast atomizers for injecting main liquid fuel. A pilot fueling arrangement is provided that is capable of starting the gas turbine engine using either gaseous or liquid fuel. The injector includes a labyrinth-shaped cooling passage capable of providing cooling air to cylindrical walls of an injector centerbody.
Abstract:
The present gas turbine engine (10) includes a disc assembly (64) defining a disc (66) having a plurality of blades (70) attached thereto. The disc (66) has a preestablished rate of thermal expansion and the plurality of blades have a preestablished rate of thermal expansion being less than the preestablished rate of thermal expansion of the disc (66). A shroud assembly (100) is attached to the gas turbine engine (10) and is spaced from the plurality of blades (70) a preestablished distance forming an interface (108) therebetween. Positioned in the interface is a seal (110) having a preestablished rate of thermal expansion being generally equal to the rate of thermal expansion of the plurality of blades (70).
Abstract:
A turbine blade having a preestablished rate of thermal expansion is attached to a turbine flange having a preestablished rate of thermal expansion being greater than the preestablished rate of thermal expansion of the turbine blade. The turbine flange includes a first upstanding flange and a second upstanding flange having a groove formed therebetween. The turbine flange further includes a recess. Each of the first and second upstanding flanges have a plurality of bores therein. A turbine blade has a first member and a second member positioned in one of the groove and the recess. Each of the first member and the second member have a plurality of bores therein. And, a pin is positioned in respective ones of the plurality of bores in the first and second upstanding members and the first and second members and attach the blade to the turbine flange. The pin has a preestablished rate of thermal expansion being substantially equal to the rate of thermal expansion of the blade.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for producing a temperature profile of a part operating within a machine is provided. The machine is operated with the part for a predetermined period of time. The part is placed in a light box in which a camera produces an image of the part. The image is compared with a standard set of colors and the standard color most closely corresponding to each pixel of the image is selected.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method is provided for simulating a plurality of bearing orbits. The apparatus includes a first simulator for producing signals indicative of a first simulated bearing orbit; a second simulator for producing signals indicative of a second simulated bearing orbit; a control for varying the rotor journal position for each of the first and second simulated bearing orbits; a control for varying the orbit amplitude for each of the first and second simulated bearing orbits; and a control for modifying the rotor mode shape of the first and second simulated bearing orbits.
Abstract:
A punch press machine for punching a series of holes in a cylindrical work piece has a main frame, a clamping fixture for holding the work piece, and a punch press frame having a horizontal moving punch and a die for receiving the punch. The clamping fixture is moveable relative to the main frame along a first horizontal axis and the punch press frame is moveable relative to the main frame along a second vertical axis for lowering the punch and die into a punching position with the punch on one side of the work piece and the die on the other side of the work piece.
Abstract:
Trim balancing of rotating components in the past has increased manufacturing cost. In many past applications, the time and energy required to trim balance rotating components required partial disassembly of an outer case or structure member. The present trim balancing system allows the gas turbine engine to be balanced with the outer case in situ. Access to a rotating component from the exterior of the case is made possible by a compressor air flow path and a pair of holes. The balancing can be accomplished by adding or removing weights or plugs to a band assembled on the rotating component.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for determining and maintaining the temperature of a primary zone of a combustor of a gas turbine engine at a predetermined level is provided. A first sensor senses the inlet air temperature of the combustor, a second sensor senses the inlet temperature of the turbine gases, and a third sensor senses the speed of or measures the load of the engine. Based on the first and second sensed temperatures, the speed or the load, and the preestablished combustor design parameter, the primary zone temperature of the combustor T.sub.pz is calculated. A controller maintains the combustor at a predetermined setpoint temperature by moving an air bleed valve between open and closed position, or a plurality of inlet guide vanes between open and closed positions.
Abstract:
Past methods and apparatus for manufacturing a rotor assembly have been used to provide rotor assemblies for rotating electric machines. Many of these electric machines rotate at low speeds. The present method and apparatus for manufacturing a rotor assembly can be used to make a rotor assembly to be used at high speeds. The rotor assembly includes a shaft having a frustoconical mounting surface defined thereon and having a plurality of magnets attached to the frustoconical mounting surface. A cover having a frustoconical inner surface surrounds the magnets and compressively secures the magnets to the shaft. The compressive forces applied by the cover and the adhesive used to secure the magnets insuring that a positive contact pressure exists between the magnets and the shaft during operation of the electric machine.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a ceramic nozzle guide assembly with an apparatus for mounting it to a metal nozzle case that includes an intermediate ceramic mounting ring. The mounting ring includes a plurality of projections that are received within a plurality of receptacles formed in the nozzle case. The projections of the mounting ring are secured within the receptacles by a ceramic retainer that allows contact between the two components only along arcuate surfaces thus eliminating sliding contact between the components.
