    Abstract: A device for endometrial ablation includes a selectively expandable bladder configured for insertion through a cervical canal of a patient and into a patient's cervix. The selectively expandable bladder defines an interior volume for receiving a thermally conductive medium which, when introduced into the interior volume, expands the selectively expandable bladder against the uterine tissue of the cervix. One or more insulative substrates is operably disposed within the interior volume and supports a thermal assembly on the one or more insulative substrates. The thermal assembly couples to an energy source and is configured to conduct thermal energy to a thermally conductive substrate upon activation of the thermal assembly, which, in turn, heats the thermally conductive medium in contact with the thermally conductive substrate to treat the uterine tissue of a patient.

    Abstract: A jaw member for an end effector assembly of a vessel sealing instrument includes a seal plate assembly having first and second seal plates joined atop one another, the second seal plate defining a channel extending from a proximal to a distal end thereof. A thermal cutter assembly includes a substrate disposed within the channel which extends from the proximal to the distal end of the second seal plate. An insulator is disposed atop the substrate and is configured to extend therealong. A resistive element is disposed atop the insulator and is configured to generate heat upon activation thereof. An encapsulant is configured to electrically insulate the resistive element and thermally conduct heat from the resistive element, such that, upon activation thereof, tissue disposed within the end effector assembly is cut along the resistive element.

    Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing that supports an elongated shaft. A selectively movable drive rod extends through the elongated shaft and carries a cam pin in a longitudinal direction. An end effector for surgically treating tissue is supported by the elongated shaft and includes upper and lower jaw members pivotally coupled to one another about a pivot axis. The upper jaw member includes a first pair of laterally spaced flanges, and the lower jaw member includes a second pair of laterally spaced flanges defining a camming slot for engaging the cam pin. The flanges are arranged in an offset configuration where one flange of the upper jaw member is positioned on a laterally exterior side of a corresponding flange of the lower jaw member, and the other flange of the upper jaw member is positioned on a laterally interior side of the other flange of the lower jaw member.

    Abstract: A forceps includes an end effector assembly having a stop and a plurality of overmold teeth within at least one jaw member. One (or both) of the jaw members is moveable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. One (or both) of the jaw members includes a stop molded within an insulative housing, and an insulator plate with the overmold teeth formed from plastic. The overmold teeth extend through openings within a sealing plate and protrude past the tissue sealing surface of the sealing plate. The stop primarily controls the gap distance between opposing jaw members by bearing most of an applied load and the overmold teeth assist in controlling the gap distance by bearing the remaining applied load.

    Abstract: A jaw member of an electrosurgical instrument includes an insulative spacer including a face and defining first and second elongated recesses on either side of the face, first and second cleats disposed at least partially within the first and second elongated recesses, respectively, a structural frame, and a tissue treating plate. The structural frame is configured to receive at least a portion of the insulative spacer therein such that first and second elongated sides of the structural frame at least partially overlap the first and second cleats, respectively. The first and second elongated sides are engaged with the first and second cleats, respectively, to thereby secure the insulative spacer relative to the structural frame with the face exposed. The tissue treating plate is disposed on the face of the insulative spacer and is adapted to connect to a source of energy to treat tissue therewith.

    Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing including a touch sensor having a sensor surface disposed thereon. The touch sensor is configured to sense an actuation pattern input on the sensor surface. A shaft extends distally from the housing and includes an end effector disposed at a distal end thereof. An actuation assembly is disposed within the housing and operably coupled to the end effector. A control module is operably coupled between the sensor surface and the actuation assembly. The control module is configured, in response to input of an actuation pattern on the sensor surface, to actuate the actuation assembly such that a function is performed at the end effector.
