Abstract: A biometric authentication apparatus (100) according to an example embodiment includes: facial landmark detection means (102) for detecting a landmark of a face from image information obtained by an image information obtaining means (101); subject position estimation means (103) for estimating a spatial position of the subject from the position information on the landmark, and generating estimated position information; focus control means (104) for determining whether an image is in focus or not, and performing focus control based on the estimated position information; lighting means (105) for controlling a light, based on the estimated position information; and biometric authentication means (106) for performing an authentication process using the image information determined to be in focus.

The index computation unit (120) computes a surveillance index by using the arrangement information and the environmental information, the surveillance index indicating difficulty or easiness of surveilling a target object. The suitability computation unit (140) computes suitability of arrangement of the image capturing apparatus indicated by the arrangement information, based on the distribution of the surveillance index in the target region.
