摘要: A signature scheme is provided in which a message is divided into a first portion which is hidden and is recovered during verification, and a second portion which is visible and is required as input to the verification algorithm. A first signature component is generated by encrypting the first portion alone. An intermediate component is formed by combining the first component and the visible portion and cryptographically hashing them. A second signature component is then formed using the intermediate component and the signature comprises the first and second components with the visible portion. A verification of the signature combines a first component derived only from the hidden portion of the message with the visible portion and produces a hash of the combination. The computed hash is used together with publicly available information to generate a bit string corresponding to the hidden portion. If the required redundancy is present the signature is accepted and the message reconstructed from the recovered bit string and the visible portion.

摘要: The invention creates new carrier products under control of a computer. This is achieved via formal representations of postal and carrier products. It should be understood that the term new product applies to both a completely new product containing an entirely new set of features as well as an update to an existing product with possibly only a few new features or modifications are added.

摘要: Systems and methods for authenticating the mailer of a mail piece in a manner that is trustworthy and not easily susceptible to fraudulent manipulation are provided. A mail processing system is utilized by recipients of mail pieces to scan each incoming mail piece. The mail processing system obtains information from the mail piece, which can include an identification of the postage meter that was used to generate the indicium. Based on the identification of the postage meter or other unique information, the recipient's mail processing system can obtain an identification of the mailer. Once the identification of the mailer is ascertained based on this information, the recipient can utilize one or more business rules for internal delivery of the mail piece.

摘要: A method and system for generating and printing an indicium, such as a postal indicium, on an object such as a mail piece. Other printed material, such as an address block, on the object is scanned, and the scanned image is processed to abstract characterizing information descriptive of the other printed material. Alternatively, the image to be processed can be obtained by filtering the original image wit a print/scan filter which simulates printing and scanning processes. The characterizing information can be text-based or image-based. Image-based characterizing information can be measurements of word lengths, counts of outliers in images of characters, or descriptions of the shape of the other printed material. The characterizing information is combined with other information, such as postal information and the combined information is then cryptographically authenticated with a digital signature or the like. An indicium representative of the authenticated information is then printed on the object. The object's relationship to the indicium can be verified by regenerating the characterizing information from the other printed material and comparing the regenerated characterizing information with characterizing information recovered from the indicium. Thus, copies of the indicium cannot easily be used, without detection, on other objects which do not include the other printed material.

摘要: A method and system of providing postage wherein delivery fee discounts are provided based on one or more sorting levels in which mail pieces are run through the system twice. In the first run, postal codes are obtained from the mail pieces, a running tally for each participating sorting level code in each sorting level is kept, and for each code in the highest sorting level that has a tally that reaches a predetermined minimum, an indicium reflecting the highest discount is printed on: (i) the mail piece whose postal code caused the tally to reach the minimum, and (ii) any mail pieces to that postal code that are processed thereafter. In the second run, for each mail piece not having a printed indicium, an indicium is printed which reflects a proper sorting level discount, if any, based on the postal code obtained therefrom and one or more of the tallies.

摘要: A method and system that enables the accurate identification of the originator of a mail piece within a corporate mail room environment is provided. Each person that generates mail items is provided with tracking information to be placed on each mail item. The tracking information can include, for example, an employee identification number, an equipment identification number and a unique sequence number. When the mail item is received in the corporate mail room, the tracking information is scanned and the tracking information is associated with a unique aspect of the mail item. Utilizing the tracking information associated with each mail item, the ambiguity of origination of each mail item is removed as there is now a verifiable record of the originator and/or originating equipment.

摘要: A method for auditing postage dispensing transactions at a postal facility includes the steps of: receiving in a secure processor based device a request to dispense an amount of postage; updating, in response to the request, accounting data within the secure processor based device to account for the amount of postage; cryptographically securing the updated accounting data in the secure processor based device; dispensing the amount of postage by generating and applying the cryptographically, secured, updated accounting data to a mailpiece. The method further includes receiving cash value for the amount of postage dispensed; sending from the secure processor based device to an administrative computer a cryptographically secure message including the updated accounting data; obtaining and comparing, at the administrative computer, the updated accounting data from the secure message with the cash value received and previous updated accounting data received from a previous secure message from the secure processor based device, and determining if any inconsistencies exist based on the comparing; and obtaining and analyzing, at a funds management computer, the updated accounting data from the mailpiece and the updated accounting data from the secure message and determining if any inconsistencies exist based on the analyzing. An apparatus incorporates the method.
