An apparatus for heating a metal surface to remove a nonferrous thermosetting resin coating bonded to the metal surface. The apparatus uses a power supply device for providing an approximately 75-100 kW signal at approximately 10-40 kHz to the apparatus. A coil assembly device is coupled to the power supply device for producing a high frequency inductive field which will penetrate through the nonferrous thermosetting resin coating with virtually no attenuation and will induce an eddy current of sufficient power in the underlying metal substrate to rapidly heat the interface to a sufficient temperature to immediately destroy the interface bond between the nonferrous thermosetting coating and the metal substrate.

The present invention is a hand held tool for removing coatings from a substrate. The hand held tool includes a housing having a front section with an outlet, a mid section with an inlet, and a rear section, a heat source disposed within the front section of the housing for emitting heat through the outlet, and a vacuum source disposed within the mid section of the housing for providing suction through the inlet. The hand held coating remover further includes a power source disposed within the rear section for supplying power to the heat source and the vacuum source, a control panel having a heat controller for adjusting and controlling the heat emitted from the heat source through the outlet and a vacuum controller for adjusting and controlling the suction provided by the vacuum through the inlet, and a blade located adjacent to the inlet and resiliently coupled to the housing. The coating is safely removed from the substrate by first heating the coating, moving the blade across the heated coating to scape the coating, and vacuuming the coating as it is scraped or removed from the substrate. Also, any fumes that are created when the coating is heated is easily removed by the vacuum.

AN APPARATUS AND METHOD OF REMOVING PAING BY HEAT, WHICH UTILIZES A HEATING ELEMENT TO HEAT A SHEET OF MATERIAL, WHICH PREFERABLY INCLUDES A METAL FOIL AND A MESH-LIKE MATERIAL SUCH AS COTTON OR FABRIC MESH TO ENABLE THE HEATING OF THE PAINT THROUGH THE METALLIC FOIL AND MESH TO CAUSE THE SOFTENING AND LIQUIFYING OF THE PAINT TO SUCH A DEGREE THAT UNDER HEAT AND PRESSURE IT WILL BE DIRECTED INTO THE MESH OR FABRIC, AND UPON CESSATION OF HEATING THE PAINT FOR A SHORT TIME, THE HEATED PAINT WILL ADHERE TO THE MESH TO ENABLE THE REMOVAL OF THE MESH CONTAINING THE PAINT FROM A PAINTED SURFACE. THE SHEET OF METALLIC FOIL, WHICH IS PREFERABLY ALUMINUM FOIL, PREVENTS THE ELECTRICAL HEATING ELEMENT FROM BECOMING COATED WITH HEATED PAINT. ALSO THE FOIL ACTS AS AN EFFICIENT HEAT CONDUCTOR TO HEAT THE PAINT.
