A system and method of starting a water jet propulsion system for a ship in which the propulsion system includes a stator shell adapted to be mounted to the hull and having a nozzle ending in an outlet with a cross-sectional outlet area, an impeller housing attached to the stator shell and having an upstream inlet, and an impeller rotatably mounted in the impeller housing for receiving water from the inlet and discharging it through the nozzle of the stator shell so as to create a water jet upon rotation of the impeller. The method includes reducing the outlet area by partly closing the nozzle during a start up phase of the water jet propulsion system, wherein there is provided a back flow hindering arrangement arranged to hinder air to enter into the impeller housing via the nozzle.

A nozzle system includes a multitude of circumferentially distributed convergent flaps and seals that circumscribe an engine centerline. A cooling liner body cooperates with a cooling liner panel attached to respective convergent flaps and convergent seals to define an annular cooling airflow passageway which is movable therewith. Each cooling liner panels includes an arcuate cooling liner leading edge with a multiple of openings to distribute cooling airflow over both the inner “cold-side” and outer “hot-side” surfaces thereof. Through this backside cooling, thermal gradients are controlled at the attachment interface between the arcuate cooling liner leading edge and the main cooling liner body.

A nozzle system includes a multitude of circumferentially distributed divergent seals that circumscribe an engine centerline. Each divergent seal includes an interface between a forward seal bridge bracket and an aft seal bridge bracket with a forward bridge support and an aft bridge support which provides axial and radial support for the divergent seals between adjacent divergent flaps. A divergent-convergent seal joint structure includes a horn and a fork. By having the forward bridge bracket retain the divergent seal in the axial direction, there is no need for axial sliding of the divergent seal relative to the divergent flap. The joint structure provides circumferential support as the axial and radial support are provided by the bridge-bracket interface. The joint interface permits the forward end section of the divergent seal and the forward end section of the divergent flap to include a radiused surface which provides a smooth interior interface between the convergent section and the divergent sections.

A turbofan engine is provided with a conventional air by-pass duct communicating with a plenum chamber downstream of the engine core, vectoring nozzles upstream of the by-pass duct, and a non-vectoring nozzle and a jet-pipe exhausting from the plenum chamber. In conventional forward thrust mode the two sets of nozzles are closed and the jet-pipe is open. In lift thrust mode the jet-pipe is closed and the two sets of nozzles are open, the non-vectoring nozzle providing vertical thrust. The closure member for the vectoring nozzle is arranged, when open, to divert turbofan air to the vectoring nozzles which would otherwise have passed along the by-pass duct, and to divert to the vectoring nozzles exhaust gases from the plenum chamber that are constrained to flow in reverse along the by-pass duct. The non-vectoring nozzle is sized to permit a suitable split between gases exhausting there through and gases reverse flowing along the by-pass duct.
