Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a method and corresponding system for managing inter-network set up of wireless communication service. For instance, a first RAN may manage inter-network set up of wireless communication service for a first UE that is currently served by a second RAN. One embodiment takes the form of a method. The method may involve in response to receiving a first signal from the second RAN, the first RAN directing each UE of a plurality of UEs to broadcast a respective beacon. And the method may involve in response to receiving a second signal from the second RAN, the first RAN causing a particular UE among the plurality of UEs to function as an intermediary for the first RAN to serve the first UE, and the first RAN serving the first UE with the particular UE functioning as the intermediary.
Abstract:
A determination may be made that a region of the RAN is serving more than a threshold extent of WCDs configured for machine-to-machine communication. The region of the RAN may include a set of one or more wireless coverage areas, and each wireless coverage area in the set of wireless coverage areas may include at least one paging channel. The paging channel parameters of each wireless coverage area in the set of wireless coverage areas may be modified to increase a rate at which the RAN successfully pages WCDs via the set of wireless coverage areas.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus to help manage communication on a wireless channel. When a neighboring node detects on a wireless channel a ready-to-send (RTS) message from a transmitting node to a receiving node, the neighboring node will set itself to avoid transmission on the channel for a time period but will then determine whether it detects in that time period a further transmission from the transmitting node to the receiving node, related to the data transmission. The further transmission may be a confirmation-to-send (CoTS) message that the transmitting node sends to the receiving node in response to a clear-to-send (CTS) from the receiving node. If the determination is affirmative, then the neighboring node will continue avoiding use of the channel. But if the determination is negative, then the neighboring node will discontinue avoiding use of the channel.
Abstract:
Embodiments may involve the adjustment of access parameters for a wireless communication device (WCD), based on the codec that is currently associated with the WCD. An illustrative method involves a WCD: (a) determining a codec that is associated with the WCD in a given coverage area, (b) using the associated codec as a basis for determining a setting for each of one or more access parameters for an access process of the WCD, and (c) operating according to the determined settings for the one or more access parameters.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus to help detect that a particular location determination process is unreliable and to help exclude location fixes established with that location determination process from being used as a basis to provide a location-based service. In accordance with the disclosure, a server may receive at least three location fixes for a mobile station, all corresponding with each other in time and each established with a different location determination process, and the server may determine that one of the location fixes is relatively far away from the other location fixes and therefore that the location determination process used to establish that location fix is unreliable. In response to determining that the location determination process is unreliable, the server or another entity may then exclude location fixes established with that location determination process from being used as a basis to provide a location-based service.
Abstract:
A method and system for managing the allocation of uplink transmission resources. A first subscriber device may communicate with a second subscriber device over a local communication link. The first subscriber device may also transmit data over an air interface to a radio access network (RAN) serving the first subscriber device, with the first subscriber device serving as a proxy between the second subscriber device and the RAN. In response to the data including first data originated by the first subscriber device and second data originated by the second subscriber device that is received by the first subscriber device from the second subscriber device over the local communication link, the first subscriber device may be arranged to apply a different transmission priority for the transmitting of the first data over the air interface than for the transmitting of the second data over the air interface.
Abstract:
Embodiments may involve the adjustment of the way in which coverage areas are included in the active set of a wireless communication device (WCD), based on the codec that is currently associated with the WCD. An illustrative method involves a radio access network (RAN): (a) determining a codec that is associated with a WCD; (b) using the associated codec as a basis for determining a value for at least one active-set parameter for the WCD; and (c) sending a message to the WCD, wherein the message indicates the determined value for the at least one active-set parameter.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are systems and methods for dynamically adjusting drop-timer thresholds based on loading. An embodiment takes the form of a method carried out by at least one network entity in a communication system that also includes a radio access network (RAN) providing wireless service to access terminals in a coverage area, in part by enforcing a drop timer having an associated start threshold and an associated stop threshold. The method includes determining a current level of load in the coverage area, and further includes adjusting one or both of the start threshold and the stop threshold based at least in part on the determined current level of load in the coverage area.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for managing transmission of air interface measurement reports from a UE to its serving base station. In accordance with the disclosure, a UE will generally transmit such measurement reports on subcarriers having particular subcarrier spacing. However, if and when the UE detects threshold poor air interface performance, such as threshold weak signal strength from its serving base station, the UE will responsively transition to instead transmit measurement reports to its serving base station on subcarriers having smaller subcarrier spacing.
Abstract:
A wireless network receives one or more data segments transmitted by a wireless communication device (WCD) in or more transmission time intervals (TTIs), estimates a size of a next data segment to be transmitted by the WCD based at least in part on sizes of the one or more data segments transmitted by the WCD, and allocates a quantity of uplink resources (e.g., a number of physical resource blocks) to the WCD for use in one or more subsequent TTIs (e.g., TTIs used for TTI bundling) based at least in part on the estimated size of the next data segment. The network may refer to an algorithm, such as a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) congestion control algorithm, that specifies how sizes of successive data segments increase over time to predict the size of the next data segment based on the sizes of the one or more data segments.
