摘要: A drop on demand microfluidic ink jet printing system includes an ink flow chamber having a nozzle opening in a wall of the flow chamber through which ink droplets are ejected when ink in the flow chamber is at or above a predetermined positive pressure. An inlet channel opens into the flow chamber to supply thermally-responsive ink to the flow chamber at or above the predetermined pressure. A microfluidic outlet channel communicates the flow chamber with a low pressure ink reservoir such that thermally-responsive ink is normally transported from the flow chamber at a flow velocity sufficient to maintain ink in the flow chamber at a pressure less than the predetermined positive pressure. A valve selectively restricts the flow of the thermally-responsive ink through the microfluidic outlet channel sufficiently to cause an increase in ink pressure in the flow chamber to at least the predetermined positive pressure, the valve including a heater in contact with at least a portion of the associated microfluidic outlet channel, whereby the viscosity of the thermally-responsive ink can selectively be increased by heat from the heater to restrict the flow of the thermally-responsive ink from the flow chamber such that an ink droplet is ejected through the nozzle opening.

摘要: According to a feature of the present invention, a drop-on-demand ink jet printing system for delivering droplets of selectable-color ink to a receiver includes a print head having at least one ink ejecting chamber. Each ejecting chamber has an associated nozzle opening through which ink droplets are delivered to the receiver. A conduit is in fluid communication with each of the ejecting chambers and a plurality of sources of color liquid ink. Each source (1) contains liquid ink of a different color and (2) communicates with the conduit. A source of colorless liquid ink also communicates with the conduit to provide a flow of colorless liquid ink into the conduit for delivery into the ejecting chambers. A flow controller is adapted to selectably meter ink from the sources of color liquid ink into the conduit between the source of colorless liquid ink and the ejecting chambers, whereby ink slugs of selectable color are prepared in the conduit by controlled delivery of selected amounts of different color inks. The slugs are separated one from another along the conduit by colorless liquid ink.

摘要: Drop-on-demand ink jet printer capable of directional control of ink drop ejection and method of assembling the method. The method comprises a print head body having an ink ejection orifice adapted to poise an ink meniscus thereat about a center axis passing through the orifice. A deflector is coupled to the print head body and is adapted to be in communication with the poised meniscus for lowering surface tension of a region of the poised meniscus. The poised meniscus deflects away from the region of lower surface tension and away from the center axis to define a deflected meniscus, whereby an ink drop separated from the deflected meniscus travels at an angle with respect to the center axis, so that the ink drop can strike a receiver at any one of a plurality of predetermined locations on a print line.

摘要: A method of manufacturing a pump [10] for pumping various primary fluids. A body is formed from silicon dies [102,104]. A primary fluid channel [110] is formed in the body and a primary fluid supply [122] is coupled to the primary fluid channel [110] to supply a primary fluid to the primary fluid channel [110]. A mechanism for introducing a secondary fluid to an interface region of the primary fluid channel [110] is formed in the body. An energy delivery device is formed in the body to deliver energy to an interface between region between the primary fluid and the secondary fluid to create a thermal gradient along the fluid interface. The thermal gradient results in a surface tension gradient along the interface. The primary fluid will move to compensate for the surface tension gradient. Various semiconductor fabrication processes can be used to form the elements on the body.

摘要: A self-cleaning ink jet printer with cleaning mechanism and method of cleaning the ink jet printer. The printer comprises a print head having a surface thereon surrounding a plurality of ink ejection orifices. The orifices are in communication with respective ones of a plurality of ink channels formed in the print head. A solvent delivering canopy is constructed from alternating stacked layers of polyimide and stainless steel sheets with internal geometries, one on top of each other, thus creating internal fluidic passageways. The canopy is connected to a manifold body and has a passageway alignable with the surface. Contaminant residing on the surface is entrained in the solvent when a wiper blade loosens contaminant from the surface. Per an applied vacuum, the canopy vacuums the solvent and entrained contaminant from the surface.

Contaminant residing on the surface is entrained in the solvent while the wiper flushes contaminant from the surface. A vacuum canopy is connected to the wiper and has a third passageway therethrough alignable with the surface. The canopy vacuums the solvent and entrained contaminant from the surface. 摘要: A cleaning assembly (170) for removing contaminants from the surface (90) of an ink jet print head (60) in a self-cleaning ink jet printer (10). The print head (60) defines a plurality of ink channels (31) terminating in orifices (25) with a surface (90) surrounding the orifices (25). A gutter (17) is disposed opposite the print head surface (90) for collecting ink droplets (100) ejected from the orifices (25). A cleaning assembly (170) includes a cup (190) defining a cavity (197) with an open end (195) adapted to make contact with the print head surface (90). An inflow channel (210) provides the entry pathway for cleaning liquid to flow into the cavity (197) via a gap (220). An outflow channel provides an exit pathway for the flow of cleaning liquid from cavity (197). The inflow channel (210) and outflow channel are arranged to direct the flow of cleaning liquid into the cavity (197), over the print head surface (90) and orifices (25) so that contaminants are removed from the print head surface (90) and orifices (25).

摘要: Self-cleaning printer having ultrasonics and method of assembling same for cleaning a print head surface and ink ejection orifices. The printer comprises a print head defining a plurality of ink channels therein, each ink channel terminating in an ink ejection orifice. The print head also has a surface thereon surrounding all the orifices. Particulate matter may reside on the surface and also may completely or partially obstruct the orifice. Therefore, a cleaning assembly is disposed relative to the surface and/or orifice for directing a flow of fluid along the surface and/or across the orifice to clean the particulate matter from the surface and/or orifice. The cleaning assembly includes an ultrasonic transducer in communication with the fluid for generating ultrasonic vibrations causing pressure waves within the fluid. Presence of the pressure waves induces a hydrodynamic force in the fluid. This force acts against the particulate matter to clean the particulate matter from the surface and/or orifice. A pump is also provided for pumping the fluid from the surface and/or orifice as the surface and/or orifice is cleaned. As the surface and/or orifice is cleaned, the particulate matter is entrained in the fluid. A filter is provided to separate the particulate matter from the fluid.

摘要: A self-cleaning ink jet printer with oscillating septum and ultrasonics and method of assembling the printer. The printer has a print head defining a plurality of ink channels therein, each ink channel terminating in an ink ejection orifice. The print head also has a surface thereon surrounding all the orifices. Contaminant may reside on the surface and also may completely or partially obstruct the orifice. Therefore, a cleaning assembly is disposed relative to the surface and/or orifice for directing a flow of fluid along the surface and/or across the orifice to clean the contaminant from the surface and/or orifice. The cleaning assembly includes an oscillatable septum disposed opposite the surface or orifice for defining a gap therebetween. Presence of the septum accelerates the flow of fluid through the gap to induce a hydrodynamic shearing force in the fluid. This shearing force acts against the contaminant to “sweep” the contaminant from the surface and/or orifice. Also included is an ultrasonic transducer in communication with the fluid for generating a plurality of pressure waves in the fluid for dislodging the contaminant. A pump in fluid communication with the gap is also provided for pumping the fluid through the gap. As the surface and/or orifice is cleaned, the contaminant is entrained in the fluid. A filter is provided to separate the contaminant from the fluid.
