A lightweight extremely versatile cross-connect frame and associated stand-off brackets are presented. This cross-connect frame comprises few components with integrally designed hole patterns to retain communication connector blocks and other standard products that require the dimensions of an EIA standard relay rack. The enhanced manufacturing and assembly produce clean sturdy frames which can be mounted either directly or with compatible stand-off brackets to a wall or 19" EIA relay rack. Additionally, these frames, with or without stand-off brackets, minimize the mounting space required by being both an even RMS (Rack Mount Space) in length and end stackable.

A shielded connector assembly having a snap locking mounting scheme. The assembly includes a panel yoke (2) with snap locking elements (21) for snap lockingly, removably securing the panel yoke (2) in a panel or cover plate. The panel yoke (2) is also constructed to snap lockingly engage a shielding device (30) which in turn is constructed to snap lockingly engage a connector assembly comprising an interconnecting device (61) which may be a printed circuit board (59) including integrally defined reactive elements designed to compensate for reactive imbalance of electrical components connected thereto. A pair of wire termination blocks (70) mounted to a first side of the circuit board are connected by circuitry on the circuit board to a corresponding modular jack (60) mounted on a second side of the circuit board. The reactive elements produce an impedance between selected leads of the modular jack and the wire termination blocks by the circuitry. A snap locking combination of the shield device (30) and a shielding cover (90) completely shields the connector assembly (61). For joining the assembly parts, the shield includes pawls (32) and engagement members (33) that latch to cutouts (18) in the yoke and to apertures (94) in the shield cover, respectively. The shield device (30) includes a cable shield restraint (36). In one embodiment, a dual opening yoke receives two shielding devices. In another embodiment, a single opening yoke receives one shielding device.

An electrically enhanced wiring block with break test capability employs a printed circuit board which includes integrally defined transmission lines and capacitive elements designed to improve impedance characteristics and electrical balance between interconnected wiring and connecting strips and thereby optimize its transmission performance. The transmission lines consist of impedance controlled circuitry with integral capacitive elements that are provided by means of a novel use of plated through holes. The holes may be sized, spaced and interconnected in various configurations to generate the desired capacitance. Two rows of connecting blocks with a row of connecting strips therebetween are mounted to one side of the circuit board preferably by solderless connectors and are interconnected by circuitry on the circuit board. The capacitive elements are connected between selected leads of the connecting blocks and connecting strips by the impedance controlled circuitry. The circuit board is mounted onto a bracket which is itself mounted onto a wiring block base. A series of disconnect plugs are provided for breaking electrical connection between selected connecting block positions by separating contacts with selected connecting strip positions. Also, a series of modular jack test assemblies are provided for testing and at other times when modular jack connection is desired. The modular jack test assembly comprises a modular jack mounted on a circuit board having edge contacts for mating with the contacts of the connecting strip.

A wiring block, in accordance with the present invention, comprises a base having at least one wiring strip snap lock mounted thereto and having a leg assembly snap lock mounted at each end of the base. The leg assemblies provide a space behind the wiring block (when mounted) for cables/wires that are to be terminated at the wiring block. The detachable leg assemblies are an important feature of the present invention as they provide for improved cable/wire management during installations, moves and changes, as compared to that of the prior art. The base has openings between selected wiring strips for allowing cables/wires to pass through also improving cable/wire management. Further, the wiring strip includes spaced notches to facilitate wiring thereto.

A novel patching device comprises discrete modules, each having a unitary molded housing which incorporates a pair of oppositely disposed (e.g., back-to-back) standard female modular jacks on a front face thereof. A rear face of the housing includes retaining means for retaining a printed circuit board having circuitry associated therewith which normally maintains a constant electrical interconnection between respective conductive pins in each of the jacks. This normally constant interconnection is interrupted or "pre-empted" when a known and standard modular plug is inserted into a jack whereby the resilient conductive pins are urged outwardly from contact with the printed circuit board. Each discrete module includes novel snap fitting means which permits disengageable snap fit attachment to an opening of a panel. Significantly, the module may be snap fit either from the front or opposed rear planar surface of the panel.
