    Abstract: An overhead door apparatus utilizing a torsion spring counterbalancing mechanism. The counterbalancing mechanism includes a worm drive ring-shaped gear winding mechanism for setting the appropriate torque or number of winds in the spring. A counting mechanism is provided to indicate to the installer the number of winds being given to the spring. Means are also provided for accommodating spring growth and contraction during winding and unwinding using the winding mechanism and during normal raising and lowering of the door. A spring clip gear retainer is disclosed for preventing rotation or creep of the worm drive gear and spur gear during normal raising and lowering of the door. A second embodiment is disclosed allowing more universal interchangeability of components between the left and right sides of the door system, easy snap-in assembly, and including a telescoping spring cover. Each embodiment includes a spring winding counter.

    Abstract: An overhead door apparatus utilizing a torsion spring counterbalancing mechanism.     Abstract: A pre-assembled, spring loaded, block and tackle window sash balance assembly is adapted for providing vertical support for a window sash running in an elongated, generally upright sash run having a generally C-shaped guide channel extending along its plow region. The assembly comprises a generally U-shaped housing for a block and tackle spring balance device. The assembly further includes spaced slide means which are discrete from the housing itself and which are slidably interengageable with the guide channel for removeably attaching the assembly to the sash run. Accordingly, the block and tackle balance assembly may be pre-assembled and then conveniently and efficiently attached to the sash run and supported in a position to provide spring balanced support for a window sash mounted in the sash run.

    Abstract: A safety device for use with an overhead garage door assembly which includes elongated coil springs on either side of the door counterbalancing the door weight for assisting in the opening and closing of the door. The safety device includes an elongated flexible member extending longitudinally through each of the coil springs and being secured at its ends to fixed supports. Each end of each spring is substantially surrounded by a substantially tubularly shaped member which includes an end cap. The ends of each spring are secured to their respective supports through holes in the end caps and additional holes allow the elongated flexible members to pass therethrough. Whereby broken portions of a spring will be retained either on the elongated flexible member or within the tubular members in the event of breakage of the coil spring.

    Abstract: A counterbalancing mechanism for an articulated rolling door mounted for movement horizontally away from the doorway when the door is opened, with the weight of the vertical portion of the door producing variable forces urging the door towards its closed position as the door is moved between its open and closed positions. A drum is connected to the door and mounted for rotation in response to movement of the door between its open and closed positions, the drum having a spiral groove formed in the outer surface for guiding a cable along the drum when the drum is rotated. A cable is connected to the drum and adapted to wrap around the drum in the spiral groove in response to rotation of the drum in one direction, and to unwrap from the drum in response to rotation in the opposite direction. A weight is suspended from the cable for applying a torque to the drum, and thus applying a force to the door, urging the door toward its open position. The radius of curvature of the spiral groove about the axis of the drum gradually decreases along the length of the drum so that the torque arm between the axis of the drum and the cable gradually decreases as the cable moves along the spiral groove for counterbalancing the variable forces urging the door toward its closed position. At the small end of the drum, the spiral groove preferably approaches the axis of the drum to reduce the torque arm to substantially zero when the door is in its open position. In one embodiment, a secondary cable is connected to a secondary drum having a conventional spiral groove, with this secondary cable being connected to the door for decreasing the torque exerted on the secondary drum as the door is moved toward its closed position. This secondary cable and drum permit the use of a smaller rate of change in the radius of curvature of the spiral groove in the primary drum than would otherwise be required. For safety purposes, a brake means may be connected to the drum for automatically locking the drum and preventing further movement of the door in response to a malfunction in the counterbalancing mechanism.
