In a computer-mediated method for providing representative images, image records are classified spatio-temporally into groups. In each group, image records are partitioned into clusters and the hierarchically highest cluster is ascertained. The partitioning is between a hierarchy of feature clusters and a remainder cluster, based on a predetermined plurality of saliency features. Feature clusters each have one or more of the saliency features. The remainder cluster lacks the saliency features. Feature clusters are each exclusive of the saliency features of any higher clusters in the hierarchy and non-exclusive of the saliency features of any lower feature clusters in the hierarchy. A representative image of each group is designated from respective image records based on: the respective saliency feature of the highest cluster when the highest cluster is a feature cluster and independent of the saliency features when the highest cluster is the remainder cluster.

A method of characterizing images taken during a event into one or more sub-events is disclosed. The method includes; acquiring a collection of images taken during the event; identifying one or more particular person(s) in the collection and the apparel associated with the identified person; searching the collection to identify if the apparel associated with identified particular person(s) has been changed during the event; identifying one or more sub-events for those images in which the particular person(s) have changed apparel.

A method for organizing visual digital objects into a histogram timeline having a first axis with a timeline representing a range of time organized into separate time periods and a second axis orthogonal to the timeline axis representing a number of digital multimedia objects corresponding to portions of the histogram timeline. Each time period is associated with a graphical metaphor extending from the first axis in a direction along the second axis to an extent that indicates a relative number of visual digital objects associated with the time periods. Each said graphical metaphor comprises event icons which group the visual digital objects associated with the selected time period according to events. The icons are proportionately sized to indicate the number of visual digital objects in the group relative to the total number of visual digital objects associated with the selected time period.

In a method and system for providing access to a collection of records via a user interface, a plurality of different partitions of the collection are determined. Each partition is based on a different parameter. Each partition has two or more clusters having different values of the respective parameter. Weights are assigned to each of the clusters relative to all of the other clusters of all of the partitions. The clusters are rank ordered by weight to provide a single ranking. The user interface is equipped with controls that give user-selected direct access to each of the clusters of a leading portion of the ranking.

A method for customizing a presentation of a set of digital images provided by a user is disclosed, comprising the steps of selecting an initial presentation format criteria for the set of digital images by the user; analyzing the digital images for additional information; providing to the user a first portable electronic storage medium having the set of digital images stored thereon, the images capable of being presented to the user on a display device in accordance with a first presentation format based upon the initial selected presentation format criteria and the analysis of the additional information; and providing a software program to the user enabling the user to select additional presentation format criteria.

A method for automatically organizing digitized photographic images into events based on spoken annotations comprises the steps of: providing natural-language text based on spoken annotations corresponding to at least some of the photographic images; extracting predetermined information from the natural-language text that characterizes the annotations of the images; segmenting the images into events by examining each annotation for the presence of certain categories of information which are indicative of a boundary between events; and identifying each event by assembling the categories of information into event descriptions. The invention further comprises the step of summarizing each event by selecting and arranging the event descriptions in a suitable manner, such as in a photographic album.

A method for classification of image regions by probabilistic merging of a class probability map and a cluster probability map includes the steps of a) extracting one or more features from an input image composed of image pixels; b) performing unsupervised learning based on the extracted features to obtain a cluster probability map of the image pixels; c) performing supervised learning based on the extracted features to obtain a class probability map of the image pixels; and d) combining the cluster probability map from unsupervised learning and the class probability map from supervised learning to generate a modified class probability map to determine the semantic class of the image regions. In one embodiment the extracted features include color and textual features.

Duplicate images are detected by providing at least two images captured at determinable times; computing an indication of the image content for each image; determining the time of capture of each of the images; and evaluating the indication of image content and the time of capture to determine whether the images are duplicate images. The images are divided into blocks and the indication of image content is computed from a histogram for each block. Thereafter, the step of evaluating the indication of image content and the time of capture comprises comparing one or more blocks of one image, using a histogram intersection metric, to corresponding blocks of another image and using the time difference between capture of the two images to determine whether the images are duplicate images.

A method for automatically classifying a digital image as a dud, the method comprises the steps of receiving the digital image; determining individually or any combination of sharpness,;contrast, noise, and exposure of the digital image; determining a threshold individually for sharpness, contrast, noise, and exposure, or a threshold for any combination of sharpness, contrast, noise, and exposure which determined threshold or thresholds determines if the image is classified as a dud; and classifying the image as a dud based on the determination of the previous step.
