An adjustable cable pulling apparatus and method for pulling cable through interior compartments of a marine vessel. The apparatus consists of a motor, a pair of rollers and a plurality of drive gears that transfer the driving force of the motor to at least one of the rollers for pulling cable therebetween. The cable is manually threaded through the rollers of the apparatus and then can operate automatically once the apparatus is energized. The apparatus is portable and can be mounted various cable pulling configurations. Additionally, the apparatus is adjustable to accept various sized cables which can be pulled at various speeds. Furthermore, the clamping force of the rollers can be adjusted to incrementally increase or decrease the frictional forces between the cable and the rollers.

A slack puller has symmetrical sheave assemblies on each side of a cable path. The sheave assemblies each include a driven sheave mounted on an arm. When the sheaves are engaged with the cable by an actuator, tension in the cable pulls the sheaves in a way which tends to increase the compressional forces exerted by the sheaves on the cable. The self actuating nature of the slack puller allows compressional forces on the cable to be kept small until the cable comes under tension. The sheaves are driven by positive displacement hydraulic motors connected in series with a hydraulic pump. This permits the sheaves to turn quickly when the cable is not under tension and slows the sheaves as tension in the cable increases. The slack puller operates more quickly and causes less cable damage than conventional slack pullers. The slack puller has particular application in skyline logging operations where its compact size is an additional advantage.

Putting through and releasing (slackening) of the line is facilitated, and the improvement takes effect with respect to both rotation directions independent of the direction. The surface contouring of the discs is implemented as inwardly directed radial waves of the described form which are designed as straight lines or curves.

A rope traction device used as a winding instrument for a moving scaffold and other construction, loading and unloading and conveying machines, includes a sheave which is rotated by a motor through a speed reduction gear and around which a part of a traction rope is wound, and is movable along the rope by rotating the sheave. The sheave is provided with a rope groove formed by a pair of parallel and planar side plates substantially along the entire circumference of the sheave for receiving a part of the rope therein and resiliently pressing the rope on its side portions. The rope traction device includes an improved brake system according to which slots elongated in the circumferential direction are formed in each clutch member and each slot has a greater depth axially in the central portion thereof than in other portions. Steel balls are provided in the slots so as to be movable between the central portion and other portions of the slots so as to change the distance between the clutch members and thereby apply and release the brake.
