A fungistatic composition containing as the active components (i) at least one of a group of specified substituted benzimidazoles exemplified by 1-(butylcarbamoyl)-2-benzimidazole carbamic acid methyl ester and (ii) 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole in a weight ratio of said substituted benzimidazole to said benzothiazole of between 10:1 and 1:2, and preferably in a ratio between 5:1 and 2:1 with an optimum ratio of 3:1. The composition preferably contains an inert carrier. The invention also includes the process of treating seeds with said fungistatic composition.

The preparation and properties of representative members of this new class of synergistic phosphonates are described, and test results of their synergistic combinations with representative cyclopropanecarboxylates are reported.

The present invention relates to certain processes and compositions useful for inhibiting and/or controlling the growth of slime in water and, in particular, water employed for industrial purposes. Water employed in the manufacture of pulp paper and water employed in cooling water systems, as well as other industrial waters, provide environments which are conducive to slime formation. The novel compositions of the present invention are mixtures which show unexpected synergistic activity against microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and algae, which produce slime in aqueous systems. The slime, of course, is objectionable from an operational and/or aesthetic point of view. Specifically, the invention is directed to and the use of compositions comprising a combination of 5-chloro-4-phenyl-1, 2dithiole-3-one and organo-bromine compounds (or mixtures thereof). The inventive compositions inhibit the growth of slime in water, or more specifically, possess biocidal activity against bacteria, fungi and/or algae. The organobromine compounds contemplated for use in accordance with the present invention may be exemplified by; bis-1, 4-bromoacetoxy-2-butyne; bis-1, 4bromoacetoxy-2-butene; alpha-bromo-p-methylacetophenone and betabromo-betanitrostyrene.

The compounds which are used in accordance with the present invention have been defined specifically. However, those compounds which are derivatives of the specific compounds and which possess the capacity to kill or inhibit the growth of slimeforming microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae can also be substituted providing, of course, that the composition yields a synergistic composition for the purpose of controlling slime. The inventive composition inhibits the growth of slime in water, or more specifically, possesses biocidal activity against bacteria, fungi and/or algae.
