摘要:
A fiber optic connector including one or more ferrule assemblies having a ferrule and a keyed ferrule holder defining a first key slot and a second key slot, and a connector housing defining a key that is received within the first or the second key slot. The first key slot configures the connector in a first keyed position for simultaneous, coplanar end face polishing of the ferrules, and the second keyed position configures the connector for mating with a receptacle, optical device or another connector. A fiber optic connector including a connector outer housing defining a first key slot for positioning the connector housing in a first keyed position and a second key slot for positioning the connector housing in a second keyed position, a connector inner housing defining a key and a ferrule assembly including a ferrule and a ferrule holder, wherein the ferrule assembly is biased outwardly within the connector outer housing. The connector outer housing is independently positionable between the first keyed position for end face polishing and the second keyed position for connector mating.

The method and apparatus of the present invention is capable of precisely determining the orientation of the axis of the guide pin hole defined by a multifiber ferrule. Since the axis of the guide pin hole has a direct relationship to the alignment of the optical fibers, the method and apparatus can also precisely determine the end face angle of the ferrule based upon the axis of the guide pin hole without reference to external features of the ferrule. A measurement pin is initially positioned in a guide pin hole such that a first end of the measurement pin is disposed proximate the end face of the ferrule. The reference plane defined by the first end of the measurement pin is then measured, such as by an interferometer. Based upon the reference plane and the predetermined angle between the reference plane and the axis of the guide pin hole, the method and apparatus can precisely determine the orientation of the axis of the guide pin hole. The method and apparatus can also measure a plane defined by at least a portion of the end face of the ferrule, such as a region of interest surrounding the optical fibers. Based upon an angular difference between the reference plane defined by the first end of the measurement pin and the plane defined by the end face of the ferrule, the method and apparatus can then precisely determine at least one end face angle.

A ferrule is provided that includes a ferrule body defining a longitudinally extending groove that can serve as an alignment feature for polishing operations. In this regard, the ferrule body extends longitudinally between opposed front and rear surfaces so that at least the rear surface generally defines a substantially rectangular shape in lateral cross-section. In addition, the ferrule body typically has first and second major sides and first and second minor sides with the first and second major sides being larger than the first and second minor sides. The ferrule body defines the longitudinally extending groove in at least one of the major surfaces. A jig is also provided for engaging the longitudinally extending groove defined by the ferrule body in order to hold the ferrule in an aligned position during polishing operations. In this regard, the jig includes a jig body having an alignment feature for engaging a complimentary alignment feature of the ferrule. The jig also includes a support element capable of engaging another side of the ferrule, wherein at least one of the jig body and the support element is capable of pivoting. By appropriately sizing those elements of the jig body and the support element that contact the ferrule, the contact elements can be inserted through openings defined by the connector housing such that the front surface of the ferrule can be precisely polished after the ferrule has been assembled into a fiber optic connector.

A method and apparatus precisely determines the orientation of the axis of a guide pin hole defined by a multifiber ferrule, and therefrom, precisely determines an end face angle of the ferrule without reference to external features of the ferrule. A measurement pin is positioned in the guide pin hole with a first end disposed proximate the end face of the ferrule. A reference plane defined by the first end of the measurement pin is measured. The orientation of the axis of the guide pin hole is determined based upon the predetermined angle between the axis of the guide pin hole and the reference plane. A plane defined by at least a portion of the end face of the ferrule is then measured. The end face angle is precisely determined based upon the angular difference between the reference plane and the plane defined by the end face of the ferrule.

Devices and methods are described that permit simple correction of a fiber optic polarity reversal problem. An adapter is described having receptacles to receive a connector on a first end, or user end, and on a second end, or contractor end. Both the receptacles provide keying arrangements so that the connectors can be received only when correctly oriented with respect to the adapter. The keying arrangement on the contractor end, however, is reversable so that the connector may be inserted in one of two predetermined orientations, at the behest of the contractor or installer. Adapters are also described that receive connectors only in a physically reversed orientation to counteract a reverse polarity condition. In addition, a jumper is described that can be interposed between a connector and adapter to correct a reverse polarity condition.

A ferrule is provided that defines a shoulder having curved corners. In this regard, the ferrule includes a lengthwise extending shaft and an enlarged rear portion proximate the shaft. The rear portion is larger in lateral cross-section than the shaft to thereby define a shoulder. In addition, that portion of the shaft proximate the enlarged rear portion includes curved corners such that the shoulder has corresponding curved inner corners. A fiber optic connector housing is also provided that defines an inwardly projecting shoulder having curved corners. The fiber optic connector housing includes a forward segment defining a lengthwise extending passage and a rearward segment also defining a lengthwise extending passage. The lengthwise extending passage defined by the rearward segment is larger in lateral cross-section than the lengthwise extending passage defined by the forward segment such that a shoulder is defined at the intersection of the forward and rearward segments. In addition, that portion of the forward segment proximate the rearward segment defines a section of the lengthwise extending passage having curved corners such that the resulting shoulder also has curved corners. By including shoulders having curved corners, the fiber optic connector of the present invention allows the ferrule to float within the internal cavity defined by the connector housing without becoming dislodged and assuming a cocked position within the internal cavity.

The receptacle includes a rotatable coupling nut for engaging an externally threaded fiber optic connector assembly or plug which is mounted upon the end portion of a fiber optic cable. As such, the cross-sectional dimensions of the fiber optic connector assembly can be significantly decreased, thereby permitting the fiber optic cable to be pulled through much smaller ducts or passageways. The receptacle also includes a receptacle body adapted to be mounted in a fixed position, such as to a sidewall of an enclosure. The coupling nut cooperably engages the receptacle body such that the coupling nut is free to rotate relative to the receptacle body even though the longitudinal movement of the coupling nut relative to the receptacle body is limited. In this regard, the coupling nut extends through an aperture defined by the receptacle body such that a flange extending radially outward from the rear end of the coupling nut engages the receptacle body to thereby limit longitudinal movement of the coupling nut in a forward direction. The receptacle can also include an inner sleeve extending at least partially through the longitudinally extending bore of the coupling nut. The inner sleeve can include a flanged rear portion connected to the receptacle body rearward of the rear end of the coupling nut to thereby limit longitudinal movement of the coupling nut in a rearward direction.
