The aim of this face bow and protraction headgear design is to correct the anterior open bite in dentally Class III open bite cases. Patients were selected and full coverage acrylic cap splint-type rapid maxillary expansion appliance was cemented and activated twice a day for 5 days. After sutural separation, newly developed face bow and protraction headgear was worn and 750 g of force was applied. Newly developed appliance consisted of a face bow and forehead pad. The face bow had intraoral and extraoral components and was custom made individually for each patient. The intraoral bow was inserted from the distal openings of the tubes which was soldered to the extraoral face bow. The extraoral face bow was extended backward till the front of the ear then turned upward and ended at the level of the hooks on the forehead pad. In this extraoral appliance design only the forehead was used as anchorage unit. On both sides of the pad, adjustable wire hooks were placed which allowed us to maintain the distance from the forehead pad hooks to the face bow hooks. Heavy elastics were attached in between the hooks of the face bow and the hooks on the forehead pad.

This invention preferably describes a thin, removable polymeric appliance with tooth receiving cavities and two headgear receiving protrusions, each located on opposite sides of the appliance, intended to receive the ends of an inner bow of a headgear assembly in order to correct a patient's Class II or Class III mal-occlusion. Each headgear receiving protrusion has a channel to receive the headgear assembly. The protrusions are generally filled with a material intended to provide additional rigidity to the protrusions and withstand the forces generated by the headgear assembly. The appliance is removable and clear, and therefore offers aesthetic benefits in comparison to conventional orthodontic treatment.

This invention is an apparatus and method for monitoring and motivating user compliance for orthodontic headgear (24) of the type using a linear spring force module (22). The spring force module (22) includes first (38) and second opposite attachment members that are interconnected to provide spring tension when moved linearly apart. A position sensor (16)(18)(19) detects liner movement between the attachment members. A microprocessor (12) receives signals from the position sensor to determine wear duration, force magnitude, and whether such movement is sufficiently variable to be biological in origin or is attempted mimicry. Multiple determinations made by the processor are recorded over time to provide an evaluation of headgear wear compliance and to provide ongoing motivation for user compliance.

A device for applying a force to an orthodontic apparatus in such a manner as to allow a patient or his orthodontist to adjust the force and for recording the force as a function of the time the apparatus is actually worn. In the device, two similar compression springs are arrayed in parallel with one end of each spring pushing against a movable saddle disposed distal from the patient's jaw. The opposite end of each spring abuts a stop which together with the springs and saddle is housed within a case. Belts which extend around the user's head and/or neck hold the case as well as the stop housed therein in fixed position during use. After the device is placed on the patient, the extension of each spring can be adjusted by repositioning the stop. The movable saddle, on the other hand, is fastened to one end of a strap connected to the orthodontic apparatus. Pulling the strap further compresses the two springs between the saddle and the stop. The force exerted by the springs on the strap is measured by tracking the movement of the saddle. When a force above a predetermined setpoint is applied, a solid state timing unit is activated. The device also contains a solid state memory for storing the patient's force/time history between office visits. Accessible through an IR window formed in the case, data stored in the memory can be retrieved for immediate review by a portable memory readout unit.

An orthodontic appliance for applying an anterior traction to a jaw of a patient is disclosed. The appliance includes a strap assembly which is secured against movement to the upper portion of the patient's head. A pair of side pieces are secured to and depend downwardly from opposite sides of the strap so that a lower end of each side piece is positioned adjacent a cheek of the patient. A U-shaped bar is secured to the lower portions of the side pieces so that the bar extends in front of the patient's mouth. Resilient members, such as rubber bands, that extend between the U-shaped bar and the patient's jaw to impose an anterior traction on the patient's jaw. The anterior force imposed on a patient's jaw is offset by an equal and opposite posterior force transmitted solely to the upper portion of the patient's head through the bar, side pieces and the strap assembly.
