Abstract: A microcapsule for use in the treatment of dental malocclusions/misalignments based on plastic splints or aligners. The microcapsule is a few μm, such as 0.5 μm to 200 μm in size and has a shell made of plastic or glass or ceramic, the shell is filled with a liquid in the interior, and the shell breaks open when it experiences a force and releases the liquid, which can be detected optically, for example, by a color change or illumination with UV light.

Abstract: A system for evaluating an orthodontic appliance. A mobile telephone for, at an “appliance” instant, acquisition of at least one two-dimensional image (“appliance image”) of teeth at least partially representing the appliance in a service position worn by the teeth, and, at a “dentition” instant, acquisition of at least one two-dimensional image (“dentition image”) of the teeth. A computer programmed to execute, for each of a plurality of teeth represented on the at least one dentition and appliance images, the following: determination of dental and appliance attributes relative to the shape of a tooth represented on the at least one dentition image and relative to the shape of the orthodontic appliance on the at least one appliance image, respectively, and comparison of the dental and appliance attributes, followed by determination of at least a decision or at least one score according to the comparison.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for applying to elicit desired tooth movement, e.g., to align teeth, including one or more attachments that each include a base region that may rigidly attach to a tooth, a top region that may couple with an orthodontic appliance, and one or more elastically deformable biases that allows the top region to move relative to the base region force is applied to the top region. The attachment may apply a restoring force to move one or more teeth when the top region is deformed.

Abstract: Embedded sensors and onboard or off-board processing in an aligner case can detect aligner material and/or quality. Material detection can be used for counterfeit detection, or to trigger material specific events. Quality detection can include detection of common aligner failures or defects. A case for a dental appliance may include a tray for supporting the dental appliance, a cover coupled to the tray, and at least one sensor to detect a deformation of the dental appliance. A case for a dental appliance may include a tray for housing the dental appliance, a cover coupled to the tray, and at least one sensor configured to detect a change in material of the dental appliance.

Abstract: Improved dental appliances and polymeric sheet compositions are disclosed. The polymeric sheet compositions are useful for making dental appliances having outer layers comprised of a material having a modulus of from about 1,000 MPA to 2,500 MPA (“hard”) and an inner core comprised of elastomeric material or materials having a modulus of from about 50 MPa to 500 MPa (“soft”), which exhibit improved flexibility and strength, and better stain and tear resistance than currently available materials and dental appliances.

Abstract: A mouth guard includes a tray configured to encompass at least anterior teeth of a dental arch. The tray includes a pair of protrusions extending away from the tray, each protrusion configured to generally overlie a canine of the dental arch. The protrusions are configured to engage one or more anterior teeth of a dental arch, whereby damage to the at least anterior teeth of the dental arch is reduced or prevented.

Abstract: Orthodontic systems and related methods are disclosed for designing and providing improved or more effective tooth moving systems for eliciting a desired tooth movement and/or repositioning teeth into a desired arrangement. Methods and orthodontic systems include the generation of an overcorrection in the tooth-receiving cavities of an appliance worn in the dentition. The overcorrection may provide an improved and more accurately applied force or moment applied to a tooth. The overcorrected force or moment can move a tooth closer to a desired position than if not overcorrected as sufficient force can still applied to the tooth as it gets closer to the desired position. The overcorrected force or moment may also better target the root of the tooth where the biological response to tooth movement occurs. The overcorrection may be calculated in various ways as described herein.
