Abstract: A winding machine, such as a Unifil loom winder, manufactured by Leesona Corporation, Warwick, Rhode Island 02887, has a yarn traversing member releasably threadedly secured to a traverse rod which is reciprocated and rotated to provide a to-and-fro traversing motion and a builder motion to the traversing member and to a yarn advancing through a guide eye of the traversing member as the yarn is wound onto a rotating bobbin. To retain the traversing member operatively threadedly engaged with the traverse rod throughout reversal of the traversing member at relatively high-winding speeds, the traversing member has a pair of threaded jaws releasably held in positive threaded engagement with the traverse rod during winding. In one embodiment the jaws are urged into resilient engagement with the traverse rod in such a manner that should engagement of one of the jaws loosen its threaded engagement with the rod, the other jaw is more firmly threadedly mated with the rod threads. In another embodiment, the jaws are held in operatively fixed relationship with each other when they are operatively threadedly mated with the traverse rod. Upon completion of winding of a bobbin at a predetermined, adjustable position of the traversing member, the jaws are automatically opened to release the traversing member from the traverse rod. A retriever is automatically inserted between the opened jaws and the jaws are then automatically closed onto the retriever and held out of engagement with the traverse rod as a retriever carrier returns the traversing member to its starting point. While en route to the starting point, a cutter is operated to cut the yarn between the traversing member and the filled bobbin which has been doffed. A flap on the retriever carrier clamps the cut end of the yarn from the supply and engages the yarn for winding onto an empty bobbin which has been donned into the winder. The retriever carrier and the cutter are then returned to their original positions and the cycle is completed. Optionally, a tip bunch may be wound on the filled bobbin.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for severing a generally axially moving strand carried in an airstream. Closing of a slide valve member reduces the velocity of, and preferably substantially stops the stream, thereby reducing the velocity of and preferably stopping the strand. Substantially simultaneously therewith, and preferably after the strand is substantially stopped, a scissor is operated to sever the strand. As the valve member is closed, a guide thereon positions the strand for receipt by the scissor which is operated by a cam on the closed valve member to cut the strand.

Abstract: A winding machine for automatically transferring a continuously advancing strand of yarn between upper and lower winding heads. In order to transfer winding of the yarn from the lower head to the upper head, a guide wheel is moved into engagement with the advancing strand and reroutes it into position for attachment to the upper head. Then a transfer arm is actuated and moves the rerouted yarn so that it is attached to the upper winding head for winding thereon, whereupon the yarn is cut and the tail of the cut yarn winds onto the lower head which may then be stopped and doffed. The strand of yarn is advanced downwardly from above the heads and in order to transfer the strand from the upper head to the lower head, a vertically moving arm first actuates a fanning interceptor which holds a run of the strand against traversing movement whereupon a guide wheel on the vertical arm engages this run of the strand and lowers it into position adjacent the lower head for engagement by a guide wheel which reroutes the advancing strand for subsequent engagement by a transfer arm and cutter, as previously described, whereupon the upper head may be stopped and doffed.

Abstract: A CLOSED AUTOMATIC SYSTEM FOR HANDLING BOBBINS FOR PREVENTING THE SYSTEM FROM BECOMING LOADED WITH BOBBINS WHICH CANNOT BE EFFECTIVELY HANDLED WITHIN THE SYSTEM. FILLED BOBBINS ARE CONVEYED, AS NEEDED, FROM A SUPPLY AREA TO A WINDING AREA WHERE THE BOBBINS ARE PREPARED FOR UNWINDING ON A SELF-TENDING WINDER. BOBBINS EJECTED FROM THE WINDER AUTOMATICALLY SORTED AND THE SUBSTANTIALLY EMPTIED BOBBINS ARE RETURNED TO THE SUPPLY AREA. PARTIALLY FILLED BOBBINS EJECTED FROM THE WINDER ARE RETURNED TO BE AGAIN PREPARED ALONG WITH OTHER FILLED BOBBINS, FOR RETURN TO THE WINDER. HOOWEVER, SOME OF THE FILLED BOBBINS MAY, FOR VARIOUS REASONS, BE IN SUCH CONDITION THAT THEY CANNOT BE PREPARED FOR UNWINDING OR HAVE NOT BEEN PROPERLY PREPARED FOR USE BY THE WINDER. IN

ORDER TO KEEP THE SYSTEM FROOM BECOMING LOADED WITH SUCH DEFECTIVE BOBBINS, THE BOBBINS ARE INSPECTED AND BOBBINS NOT PASSING INSPECTION ARE REJECTED FROM THE SYSTEM, AND ARE DEPOSITED OUTSIDE OF THE SYSTEM FOR SUBSEQUENT MANUAL INSPECTION.

Abstract: A bobbin handling system in which bobbin carriers of an overhead conveyor receive various types of bobbins from delivery stations and deliver the bobbins to receiving stations. A control system includes a stationary fluid operated control unit at each of the stations and actuators for the control units on each of the carriers. As an actuator passes a control unit it causes operating fluid to be supplied to the control unit and then closes active fluid bleed ports if its carrier and the station are both in condition to either receive or deliver a particular type of bobbin, whereupon the control unit causes bobbins to be so delivered or received. Finally, the passing actuator causes the operating fluid to be shut off.

Abstract: Bobbin handling apparatus in which bobbins are stored in random orientation in a hopper and are delivered by the apparatus in an oriented manner. The bobbins in the hopper are agitated by a member movable vertically through the hopper. This member has an upwardly open mouth and upon upward movement of the member the mouth receives small ends of a portion of the bobbins in the hopper with large ends of the bobbins resting on the member adjacent the mouth. A pusher is provided for moving the bobbins to one end of the mouth from which they are received between a pair of downwardly inclined rods rotated in opposite directions so as to lift the bobbins and permit them to move down the rods to an escapement. When a bobbin is required, the escapement opens to permit a bobbin to be discharged through a chute to a conveyor belt with the bobbins oriented on the belt with smaller ends leading.

Abstract: A winding machine incorporating yarn traversing mechanism having a pair of oppositely moving belt spans, each provided with yarn engaging guides for moving the yarn along a traversal path in a controlled manner to wind a package of yarn, the yarn being transferred from one guide to another at each end of the path adjacent each package end. The traversal path of each of the spans is regulated so that the oppositely moving spans run parallel to the axis of the package in the zone corresponding to the axial midsection of the package. In the zones corresponding to the end sections of the package the oppositely moving belt spans run in paths diverging from said parallel paths. Stabilizing pulleys are provided to track the oppositely moving belt spans and thereby preclude vibrations being introduced into the yarn during its traversal.
