Abstract: Propyl nitrate is prepared by a method comprising reacting propyl alcohol directly with a nitration mixture, containing sulphuric and nitric acids, the sulphuric acid being more than 50 per cent by weight of the mixture, the amount of water present in the mixture being not more than 14 per cent, the amount of nitric acid present in the mixture being at least equal to the stoichiometric requirement to esterify the alcohol and the ratio by weight of water to sulphuric acid in the final esterification mixture being not more than 0.35 to 1. The nitration is preferably carried out at temperatures between about -8 DEG and 10 DEG C. and the process may be carried out continuously.
