    Abstract: A new type of inflatable cushion system in disclosed that does not need an external wrapper (or other similar feature) to maintain the cushion in the rolled configuration prior to deployment. Rather, a spot adhesive is added to an inflatable cushion as the mechanism for holding the cushion in the rolled configuration. The inflatable cushion has an inflatable region and a top edge. The spot adhesive is positioned on the top edge. This inflatable region of the inflatable cushion will also include an engagement area. In generally, the spot adhesive will engage the engagement area and holds the inflatable cushion in a rolled configuration prior to deployment. The adhesive may be double sided tape that is affixed directly to the cushion. The adhesive may also be a hook and loop fastener system, such as “Velcro” or any other suitable fastener.

    Abstract: Enhanced airbag modules and associated methods are provided. An airbag module according to the invention may have a cushion with an inflatable protection zone and a flexible venting tube coupled to the inflatable protection zone. A closure mechanism may be used to compress the flexible venting tube against an anchoring member, such as a housing of the airbag module or a vehicle feature, until venting through the flexible venting tube is needed. The closure mechanism may then be actuated, for example, by igniting a pyrotechnic within a specially designed bolt of the closure mechanism. The bolt may, for example, have a bore with a pyrotechnic initiator molded-in-place within the bore. The bolt may fracture to open the closure mechanism, thereby permitting inflation gas to flow out of the inflatable protection zone via the flexible venting tube.

    Abstract: An inflator device including a pressure vessel forming a gas storage chamber having contents including a supply of stored pressurized gas. The pressure vessel forms a gas exit opening at a first end of the pressure vessel. An initiator assembly includes an initiator cover that extends through a sidewall of the pressure vessel at a first end portion of the pressure vessel, such that at least a portion of the initiator cover extends radially inwardly into the gas storage chamber. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the inflator device also includes a supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material contained within the gas storage chamber, wherein at least a portion of the supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material is reactable to produce a product gas. A second aperture is formed in the initiator cover, and is in reaction initiation communication with the supply of gas-generating pyrotechnic material.

    Abstract: A gas generant for an inflatable restraint device (for example, an airbag system for a vehicle) is a monolithic compressed solid that has a linear burn rate of greater than or equal to about 1.6 inches per second at a pressure of about 3,000 pounds per square inch.
