Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for training an industrial plant controller that controls operation of an industrial plant. In one aspect, a method comprises generating training data using an industrial plant simulation model that simulates operation of the industrial plant. The industrial plant controller is trained by a reinforcement learning technique using the training data. The industrial plant controller is configured to process an input comprising a state vector characterizing a state of the industrial plant in accordance with a plurality of industrial plant controller parameters to generate an action selection policy output that defines a control action to be performed to control the operation of the industrial plant.

Abstract: A trunnion roller thrust measurement assembly includes a trunnion roller assembly and a thrust measurement assembly. The trunnion roller assembly includes a roller configured to provide rotary support of a rotary drum; a shaft attached to the roller, the shaft being aligned with an axis of rotation of the roller; and a bearing housing configured support an end of the shaft. The thrust measurement assembly includes a bearing housing end cap attachable to an end of the bearing housing; and one or more thrust sensors disposed on the bearing housing end cap. The one or more thrust sensors are configured to sense a thrust force exerted on the bearing housing end cap by an axial displacement of the shaft. An adjustment mechanism is utilized to skew the roller based on the sensed thrust force.

Abstract: According to an aspect of the invention, a rotary feeder for transferring comminuted fibrous material is provided having as components: a rotary feeder housing, having at least one inlet opening for receiving material (chips) and at least one opening for discharging material (chips), and an internal shear edge assembly adjacent the inlet; wherein a protective baffle (doctor blade) is adjacent to the shear edge assembly; a rotor, rotatably mounted with the rotary feeder housing and having pockets for accepting material introduced to the rotary feeder housing; and a power source which rotates the rotor in said housing; and wherein the rotary feeder housing has a recess along the length of the rotor in the inlet at an exit end of the inlet, the recess being of sufficient size to allow the shear edge assembly and doctor blade to sit within the recess.

Abstract: A method is provided for controlling airflow into a furnace that employs a velocity type damper. In one embodiment, the method for controlling airflow may include engaging a velocity type damper to an air port opening of a furnace. The velocity type damper includes at least one air controlling surface that is positioned proximate to a wall of the furnace at the air port opening so that air velocity exiting the at least one air controlling surface is substantially equal to the air velocity entering the air port opening to the furnace. The method may further include adjusting a cross sectional area through the velocity type damper to control air velocity into the furnace through the air port opening.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for optimizing material processing. In one aspect, a method includes collecting, from a set of sensors, a set of current manufacturing conditions. Based on the set of current manufacturing conditions collected from the sensors, a set of current qualities of a material currently being processed by manufacturing equipment is determined. A baseline production measure for processing the material according to the set of current qualities is obtained. A candidate set of manufacturing conditions that provide an improved production measure relative to the baseline production measure is determined. A set of candidate qualities for the material produced under the candidate set of manufacturing conditions is determined. A visualization that presents both of the set of candidate qualities of the material and the set of current qualities of the material currently being processed is generated.

Abstract: A method of hydraulic actuation that includes positioning a piston within the chamber of a cylinder body, the chamber including a gas region and a fluidized region, the sidewall of the piston including at least one sealing surface for engaging the sidewall of chamber; and traversing the piston between a portion of the gas region and a portion of the fluidized region, wherein a distance of travel within the chamber that the piston traverses between the gas region and the fluidized region is less than a length of the sidewall of the piston. By increasing the length of the piston sidewall and decreasing the distance of travel for the piston, the method eliminates or substantially reduces fluid carry over in accumulators.

Abstract: In a rotary drum for thickening pulp, the rotary drum may include drainage channels for delivering filtrate from a pulp mat on the rotary drum to a filtrate chamber at an end of the rotary drum, and includes a flat face valve and plenum chamber assembly in the filtrate chamber. The flat face valve can be juxtaposed against drainage outlets of the drainage channels, wherein the flat face valve does not block the drainage outlets during a majority of the rotation of the rotary drum. An opening on the flat face valve may extend through the front surface and be aligned with the drainage outlets to provide a fluid passage through the flat face valve and to a plenum chamber behind the flat face valve such that air in the filtrate is collected in the upper portion of the plenum chamber and removed from the rotary drum.

Abstract: The present disclosure describes a system for predicting explosions in a dissolving tank. The system includes acoustic emission sensors placed in or around the dissolving tank. By filtering the recorded frequencies to the range which is most sensitive for desired explosions “fingerprints,” it is possible to predict a smelt influx before the smelt influx occurs as well as program response actions to prevent compromising explosions.

Abstract: A feedwell design for a clarifier that may better dissipate the entrance energy of feed slurry liquid exiting the feedwell and entering the clarifier. Plates having a surface area twisted around a longitudinal axis may be provided at the bottom of the feedwell. The plates may cause a change in the flow direction of the feed, from being mostly horizontal to mostly vertical, to slow the slurry. The provision of plates at the bottom of a feedwell in a clarifier may advantageously reduce the velocity of the materials entering the clarifier, or may increase the uniformity of the flow rate of the materials while reducing or maintaining the amount of shear force, turbulence, or other forces that may have a detrimental effect on clarification. Likewise, this may improve the rate at which solids settle out of the feed slurry solution, and thus improve the clarity of the removed liquid.
