Abstract: An optical system may include equipment with a housing that is configured to receive external equipment such as a cellular telephone. The external equipment may have a display mounted on a front face of the external equipment and may have additional components such as a front-facing camera. Communications circuitry in the equipment may support wired and wireless communications with the external equipment. An optical combiner in the equipment may be used to combine display image light emitted from pixels in the display with real-world image light received from external objects. The optical combiner may have a reflector with a concave lens shape that focuses light from the display towards eye boxes in which a viewer's eyes are located. The reflector may be a partial mirror or a reflective polarizer. The reflective polarizer and additional components may be used in implementing a tunable tint layer.

Abstract: Circuits, methods, and apparatus that may estimate the power being consumed by an OLED display screen of an electronic device, may provide further information about that power usage, may modify or change functions performed by the electronic device based on that power usage, and may inform an application's developer about the amount of power being used by the electronic device while the electronic device is running the application. One example may estimate the power being used by an OLED display screen of an electronic device by determining the content of images being displayed during a duration. The estimated power may then be presented to a user. The estimated power may be used in decisions to modify or change parameters of the screen or other device components.

Abstract: An electronic display may include pixel circuitry to display an image based on image data compensated for voltage variations within the pixel circuitry. Image processing circuitry may generate a compensation value to compensate the image data for cross-talk (e.g., electromagnetic coupling between an electrode of touch sensor circuitry and an electrode of the pixel circuitry) that may cause the voltage variations. Additionally or alternatively, the image processing circuitry may generate another compensation value to compensate the image data for another cross-talk (e.g., electromagnetic coupling between two electrodes of the pixel circuitry). The image processing circuitry may generate the compensated image data based on the first compensation value and/or the second compensation value.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology relate to pulsed backlight operation for a display backlight. Backlight pulse patterns are provided that include steady state pulse patterns to be applied during operation of a liquid crystal display unit of the display at a corresponding frame rate. The backlight pulse patterns can be arranged to prevent visible artifacts such as flicker or strobing, particularly at or near a transition between LCD frame rates. In some scenarios, transition pulse patterns are provided.

Abstract: Techniques for implementing and/or operating an electronic device that includes or utilizes a display panel. The display panel includes an organic light-emitting diode layer, an encapsulation layer disposed over the organic light-emitting diode layer, and a color filter layer disposed over the encapsulation layer. The color filter layer overhangs the organic light-emitting diode layer and comprises a first color filter cell of a first color component sub-pixel that at least partially overlaps an organic light-emitting diode of a second color component sub-pixel that is a different color compared to the first color component sub-pixel.

Abstract: An electronic device such as a head-mounted device may have displays that are viewable by the eyes of a viewer through adjustable lenses. The adjustable lenses may be liquid crystal lenses. A camera and other sensors in the head-mounted device may monitor the eyes of the user and gather other information. Control circuitry in the head-mounted device may control the adjustable lenses based on measured characteristics of the eyes of the user such as interpupillary distance and direction-of-view. The control circuitry may match the distance between the centers of the adjustable lenses to the measured interpupillary distance and may align the lens centers with the measured direction-of-view. The adjustable lenses may have transparent electrodes that are supplied with time-varying control signals by the control circuitry.

Abstract: Current-voltage shift determination circuitry of a processing core complex coupled to the electronic display determines total current-voltage shift values at a pixel. The current-voltage shift determination circuitry then determines temperature-based current-voltage shift values at the pixel. The current-voltage shift determination circuitry extracts the temperature-based current-voltage shift values from the total current-voltage shift values to determine age-based voltage degradation values. Display compensation circuitry of the processing core complex adjusts display of image data by the pixel based on the age-based voltage degradation values. In this manner, voltage degradation due to pixel aging may be determined separately from current-voltage shift due to temperature, and, as such, be more accurately compensated for, resulting in better display of image data. Compensation may thus be performed based on the age of the pixels and a sensed temperature at the pixels, instead of by constantly sensing current across the diodes of the pixels.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a camera and a display. The display may be configured to display virtual reality content for a user in which no real-world content from the camera is displayed or mixed reality content in which a combination of real-world content from the camera and overlaid virtual reality content is displayed. Control circuitry in the device may adjust the display and camera while transitioning between virtual reality and mixed reality modes. The control circuitry may reconfigure the camera to exhibit a desired frame rate immediately upon transitioning from virtual reality mode to mixed reality mode. Transitions between modes may be accompanied by smooth transitions between frame rates to avoid visible artifacts on the display. The camera frame rate may be synchronized to the display frame rate for at least part of the transition between the virtual reality and mixed reality modes.
