A magnetic induction pump for pumping molten metal. The pump includes a motor and a shaft operatively connected to the motor. The pump further includes at least one bipolar permanent magnet operatively connected to the shaft and a conduit for the passage of molten metal. The motor rotates the shaft and magnet about the conduit inducing eddy currents in the molten metal in the conduit which react with the moving magnetic field to produce force to pump the metal through the conduit with the metal coming into contact with only an interior surface of the conduit.

A lightweight constructed navigation buoy, and method for handling the same, is provided with waterborne stability comparable to the conventional and much heavier navigation buoys. The desired waterborne stability is achieved using a liquid-ballasting/-venting system in which a ballasting compartment and a connection cooperate to allow a liquid ballast to be added and/or removed from the ballasting compartment. The position-accuracy of said buoy can be improved by incorporating the liquid ballasted buoy with a high-strength, flexible, elastic tether providing a scope of between 1.5-to-1 and 1-to-1 at high water.

Permanent-magnetic hydrodynamic methods and apparatus stabilize a moving, flexible, thin-gauge, heat-conducting, magnetically soft ferromagnetic casting belt against thermal distortion while moving along a mold cavity being heated at its front surface by heat coming from molten metal being cast while being cooled at its reverse surface by flowing pumped liquid coolant. Hydro-magnetic devices are arranged in an array wherein flows of pumped coolant pass through fixedly throttling passageways feeding pressure pockets facing the belt's reverse surface. These pockets are shown rimmed by magnetic pole faces. Coolant issues from the pressure pockets as fast-moving films radiating therefrom and travelling in gaps between the belt's reverse surface and the pole faces. These films cool the belt and apply hydrodynamic forces levitating the belt spaced from the pole faces while the belt is stabilized in even condition by powerful reach-out magnetic attraction forces reaching out from these pole faces and extending across the gaps to the moving belt. Pumped liquid coolant is twice throttled: once in feeding into the pressure pockets and once again in flowing out from the pockets escaping over the pole faces which rim the pockets. A hydro-magnetic array includes powerful permanent magnets formed of unique permanent-magnetic material in magnetic circuits in the array providing reach-out magnetic attraction having unusual characteristics critical to successful operation of disclosed embodiments of the invention. A hydro-pillow array without magnets may be positioned downstream from the hydro-magnetic array.

A method and belt composition for improving the performance and flatness of thin revolving flexible casting belts of continuous casting machines wherein at least one wall of the moving mold is provided by a thin flexible endless metallic casting belt having a permanent insulative coating with fluid-accessible porosity in this permanent coating. Contrary to prior methods and apparatus which have sought to protect the wide thin casting belts, the present method for improving belt flatness and performance involves providing a Helium-containing gaseous film between the metal and the front face of the casting belt which is coated with a permanent insulative porous coating. For significantly improved results, this gaseous film contains at least 8 percent and preferably 15 percent and optimally 20 percent or more of Helium by volume and is non-reactive with the metal being cast, resulting in a controlled increase in the rate of heat transfer and for causing such heat transfer to become more nearly uniform and stabilized across the width of the flexible casting belt than in prior continuous casting machines of the same moving mold cross-sectional shape and size. The freezing rate advantageously becomes stabilized at a substantially higher and more uniform rate, the belt flatness becomes stabilized and the cast metallic product is thereby substantially improved both in metallurgy and surface appearance. Also, copper or copper alloy casting belts are used in certain embodiments for enhancing heat-transfer effects and belt flatness. During casting at a given speed, the freezing rate and exit temperature of the metal being continuously cast can be controlled by varying the helium percentage in the gaseous film itself. In twin-belt machines, relative heat-transfer rates into upper and lower belts are controlled by adjusting the relative helium percentages in their respective gas films.

Process and apparatus for continuous casting in a twin-belt casting machine in which the moving side dams are guided along opposite sides of the moulding cavity by guide device extending along beside the respective moving side dams, and the moving side dams are cooled by cooling fluid circulated in at least a part of the guide device and applied directly to the moving side dams. The moving side dams are cooled by cooling fluid sprayed through orifices in the guide device directly onto the moving side dams along at least a part of the downstream zone of the moulding cavity. During movement of the side dams along the moulding cavity from its entrance to its exit, they pass successively through a first (or upstream) zone in which they face molten metal and through a second (or downstream) zone in which they face solidified metal. The cooling fluid is sprayed directly onto the moving side dams only in this second zone. The first zone occupies from approximately 3/10ths to approximately 1/2 of the overall length of the moulding cavity, and the second zone occupies the remainder. The cooling fluid is advantageously sprayed directly toward the side dam for providing very effective cooling action, and this cooling fluid is aimed in a downstream direction that forms an acute angle with the moving direction of the side dam. Preferably this acute angle is in the range from approximately 20.degree. to approximately 50.degree. for propelling the cooling fluid downstream away from the first zone, and preferably the cooling fluid is water.

Improved casting method and side dam apparatus for use in twin-belt continuous metal casting machines are described particularly adapted for casting rectangular copper bar providing a casting speed almost double that obtained in prior twin-belt machines and a damblock lifetime which is more than doubled, while producing a more homogeneous and symmetrical casting structure. The side dams are formed by stringing slotted damblocks along the entire length of a flexible metal strap, except for end portions of the strap. An end-to-end weld forms an endless strap loop of accurately predetermined length, and special damblocks having two mating interlocking halves are inserted into the remaining space along the strap, whereby all blocks are free to slide on the strap but with little cumulative space between blocks, which are preferably made of a bronze alloy presenting better resistance to heat cracking and higher heat conductivity than in previous damblocks. The damblocks are cooled by controlled liquid sprays in a chamber, their temperature after cooling is sensed, and then they have an insulative material applied thereto before re-entry into the machine.

Continuous casting apparatus is described wherein the temperature of the flexible casting belts in twin-belt machines having two or more main rolls in each belt carriage is controllably elevated prior to contact with the molten metal to improve the casting conditions and the operation of the thin flexible casting belts; the temperature elevation preferably being relatively gradual may be carried out while the travelling belts are approaching the nip rolls or while the belts are in contact with the nip rolls, or both. Zone control of belt pre-heating is disclosed, and control of the coolant streams issuing from the curved nip roll tubes by use of fingernail-like extenders may be provided to aid in pre-heating the belts and in controlling their operation. Intensive infra-red heaters are shown directed at close range toward the casting surfaces of the belts, these heaters serving also to cure and dry any coating material on the belts. Heating of the nip rolls by means of hot fluid, such as steam, is described, with the hot fluid being directed into the interior of the nip roll or being directed into the deep grooves in the nip roll beneath the rear surfaces of the casting belts. Mechanical and thermal sensors may be employed to sense the distortion of the belts and to measure their operating temperatures, these sensors being shown with automatic control of the belt pre-heating action. The apparatus of the invention can be applied to twin-belt casting machines regardless of whether the molten metal is supplied by open pool, closed pool or injection feeding.

A symmetrical belt-steering and tensioning system and apparatus for twin-belt continuous metal casting machines are disclosed. A rigid squaring shaft passes through a hollow tension and steering roll and is rigidly secured to torque arms at opposite ends of the roll assuring that this roll remains parallel with the driving roll at the other end of the carriage throughout the range of tensioning travel, these arms each being associated with tension thrust means and steering means. The geometrical relationships assure that tension in the casting belts remains essentially directly proportional to the fluid pressure in the thrust cylinders, while a pre-loading arrangement removes back lash from the pivots to improve steering precision and also provides mechanical advantage. A symmetrical synchronized steering action is applied to both ends of the tension-steering roll, and axial thrust control means operate to force the roll skewing movement to center at a predetermined point. Independent adjustment of the displacement of each end of the tension-steering roll from the pass line is provided by sleeves associated with the squaring shaft and bearings in the interior of the hollow roll. A high belt tension force can be applied because there are two main large diameter rolls at opposite ends of each carriage defining the belt path as a symmetrical oval shape. Wide casting belts of 116 inches in width or more are precisely steered and tensioned for continuously casting slabs 100 inches or more in width.

An apparatus for guiding a moving, flexible, tensed casting belt on a continuous metal casting machine along a substantially oval path. The continuous metal casting machine having an entrance-end, an exit-end and a moving-mold casting region extending from the entrance-end to the exit-end. The apparatus includes a non-rotating fluid pillow structure at the entrance end of the machine. The fluid pillow structure supports the mold-width of the casting belt. The apparatus includes two narrow shoulder-pulleys at the entrance end of the casting machine which are adjacent to opposite sides of the entrance-end fluid-pillow structure. Each pulley supports a portion of the belt outside of the moving-mold casting region. Each pulley guides the belt around the fluid-pillow structure as the belt revolves along its substantially oval path. The apparatus also facilitates the sealing, controlled-venting and recovery of pressurized fluids used to levitate the belt about a fluid-pillow structure.
