    摘要: The present invention is directed to an electrical wiring device that includes a front cover member having a front major surface and a back cover member having a back major surface substantially in parallel with the front major surface. The housing further includes an electrically isolating member disposed between the front cover member and the back cover member such that a front interior region is formed between the front cover member and the electrically isolating member and a rear interior region is formed between the back cover member and the electrically isolating member. The user accessible reset button assembly establishes a plane normal to the major front surface and subdividing the rear interior region into a first rear interior region portion and a second rear interior region portion. The interrupting contact assembly is configured to provide electrical continuity between the plurality of line terminals, the plurality of load terminals and the plurality of receptacle terminals in a reset state. The plurality of line terminals, the plurality of load terminals and the plurality of receptacle terminals are decoupled in a tripped state. A protective electrical assembly includes a sensor assembly coupled to the plurality of line terminals and a solenoid assembly coupled to the interrupting contact assembly. The sensor assembly and the solenoid assembly are substantially disposed in the first rear interior region portion. The sensor assembly includes at least one toroidal transformer having a toroidal axis and the solenoid assembly including a solenoid coil having a solenoid coil axis. The toroidal axis and the solenoid coil axis are substantially parallel to one another.

The automatic self-test assembly also includes a noise immunized decision circuit configured to evaluate a plurality of test results to thereby provide a noise immunized end-of-life signal. A first sensor detects fluctuations in load current, while a second sensor detects fluctuations in line voltage. The polarities of the fluctuations are compared, and the comparison indicates whether an arc signature, potentially indicative of an arc fault, is located in the branch circuit portion or located in a remainder of the electrical distribution system.

    摘要: A fault detector sensor includes a current transformer, with two multi-turn windings each formed around a portion of the core, with one winding adjacent to each of the hot and neutral wires of the power line being protected. Both windings are connected in series in a way which reinforces arc fault noise generated by arc faults involving the line and neutral, but which causes signal reduction for noise signals from the line and neutral, or either, to ground. The windings and core are selected to self resonate at a frequency that excludes power line carrier frequencies but which includes arc fault frequencies. The core optionally has a third winding, forming a grounded neutral transformer, or ground fault detector. Instead of a third winding, one of the arc fault sensing windings can act as a dual function sensor.

    摘要: An arc fault protection device uses two detection levels for detecting both parallel and series arc faults. When a sensed load current is below a predetermined level, a first set of characteristics indicative of a series arc fault are compared to a sensed di/dt signal. When the sensed load current exceeds the predetermined level, a second set of characteristics indicative of a parallel arc fault are compared to the sensed di/dt signal. This approach allows more time to evaluate a potential series arc fault than is permitted when evaluating a potential parallel arc fault.

    摘要: Line voltage pulses from an upstream series arc fault are passed through a high pass filter. The filtered output is rectified and used to pulse-charge a capacitor. When the capacitor charge reaches a predetermined threshold, a first switch is activated, which in turn activates an SCR to trigger a circuit interrupting mechanism which interrupts a current to a load, thereby interrupting the upstream series arc fault. A separate detection circuit which requires a DC power supply preferably disables the first switch after a predetermined time after appearance of normal line voltage absent upstream series arcing.

    摘要: Briefly stated, and in accordance with a presently preferred embodiment of the invention, an arc fault detecting circuit using, a pulse width modulation, or PWM, technique is used to sense series or parallel arc faults. When arc faults occur, typically an arc step in current is followed by broad band arc noise which is caused by the random fluctuations in arc column resistance. In this invention, a logic signal is created which has a duration or width that corresponds to the time interval during which the broad band arc noise generated by the arc is present. Typically an arc fault randomly starts, generates broad band arc noise, and then extinguishes as the next current zero cross of the AC load current is approached. The random start causes PWM of the logic pulse whenever the start of the arc randomly moves with respect to the current zero cross. An arc fault that randomly starts, and then randomly stops, will also cause PWM with respect to the zero cross. The PWM logic pulse is coupled to the input of a microprocessor which measures and stores the length of the present PWM pulse under measurement, and compares that pulse to the pulse length of the last stored PWM pulse, and increments a counter if the difference in pulse length is greater than a predetermined amount. When the counter number is greater than or equal to a predetermined number held in the microprocessor memory, an output signal is sent to a controller which activates the circuit interrupter. Another input to the microprocessor, corresponding to the magnitude of the arc current, is used to adjust the predetermined number value down or up depending on the intensity of the arc fault for faster or slower interrupts respectively.

    摘要: Downstream series and parallel arcing in AC power lines is determined by using a detector and microprocessor to detect characteristic di/dt behavior received from a current sensor through which the power lines pass. When downstream parallel arcing is detected, the microprocessor uses a speedy algorithm which cannot be used to detect series arcing. Upstream series arcing is detected by sensing a flat voltage portion of the line voltage. Upstream parallel arcing is detected by sensing a voltage spike followed by a voltage flat portion of the line voltage. When upstream parallel arcing is detected, the microprocessor is temporarily shut off to avoid false tripping.
