摘要: Many proteins, when produced recombinantly, suffer from improper processing, folding and lack normal solubility. Modified proteins, including those indicative of disease states, also can have such defects. The present invention is directed to methods of identifying proper and improper protein folding, aberrant processing and/or insolubility. The method relies on the use of two components: a specialized fusion protein and structural complementation. The fusion protein contains sequences from the protein of interest and one portion of a marker protein that, by itself, is not active. A host cell then provides the remainder of the marker protein that serves to “complement” the function of the fused marker protein such that their association restores activity, permitting detection.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for producing three-dimensional structural members having one flat side from wood fibers utilizing flow deposition of the fibers onto a support. The support includes resilient deformable mold inserts. The mold inserts are formed of silicone rubber and may be blocks of the material, or may be a membrane which can be inflated to form the mold inserts. Pressing is done with a force normal to the support, and the mold inserts create response forces at varying directions to thus shape and hold the three-dimensional finished part. Heat drying also may be used.

摘要: A power back-up roll for a rotary veneer lathe comprises a drive roller for applying a rotational force to the outer periphery of a log axially mounted on the veneer lathe, a controllable drive source for driving the roller and a servo-control system for maintaining the static friction between the roller and the log. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the servocontrol system includes a first DC-generator tachometer for monitoring the peripheral speed of the log, a second DC-generator tachometer for monitoring the peripheral speed of the roller; and a feedback loop, operatively associated with the controllable drive source as well as the first and second tachometers, for matching the peripheral speed of the roller to that of the log.

摘要: A water-soluble polypeptide having the characteristics of the bacteriorhodopsin C helix such that it is largely hydrophobic and spontaneously inserts into a biological membrane as an alpha-helix. The polypeptide is administered as an aqueous solution or is contained within the lipid bilayer of a liposome. The polypeptide is modified so that it will interfere with the helix--helix interactions within the membranes of adverse cells or is coupled to a therapeutic substance, such as a protein or pharmaceutical compound, for transmission thereof through the membrane and into the cell.

摘要: A brace for securing cargo inside a containing device, such as the cargo bed of a truck, includes a first cylindrical pole with mounting brackets at opposite ends of the pole for engaging the sidewalls of the container. The cargo brace is selectively adjustable along its lengthwise axis to decrease or increase its length. Furthermore, the mounting brackets are pivotally connected to the pole to permit the brace to be installed at a selected orientation to the sidewalls. In another embodiment, the aforementioned brace includes a T-connector which is mounted arond the first pole and further includes a second pole which is engaged to the T-connector and which is perpendicular to the first pole. The second pole includes a mounting bracket which engages another sidewall or floor of the container. In another embodiment, a sleeve, having flanged ends which are perpendicular to the sleeve, and a handle, is mounted about the first pole to secure the cargo in the container. Typically, pads fabricated of an appropriate elastomer are employed at the ends of the brace to prevent damage from metal-to-metal contact, and the base is surrounded with one or more sleeves of a polymeric material to prevent damage to cargo contacted by the brace.

摘要: A three-dimensional engineered shaped fiber configuration is formed using determined structural requirements for a three-dimensional engineered shaped fiber configuration and ascertained properties of an engineered molded fiber fiberboard material. A first cut on a top surface and a second cut on a bottom surface of the fiberboard material are calculated. These calculations are based, at least in part, on the structural requirements properties of the fiberboard material. The first cut and the second cut each have a depth, a width, and a position. The first cut and the second cut have a spacing between them such that the flat piece of fiberboard material can be folded at a point located in the spacing between the first cut and second cut to position a first portion of the fiberboard material at a particular angle with respect to a second portion of the fiberboard material.
