    Abstract: A system, and corresponding method for its use, for performing various monetary transactions in a vehicle such as an aircraft, including exchanging one currency for another, obtaining currency using traveler's checks or a credit or debit card, and dispensing value cards purchased with cash or credit/debit cards. The value cards may be, for example, long-distance telephone usage cards or gaming cards, and the value cards may be increased in value or exchanged for cash using the system of the invention. A key feature of the system is that cash is always distributed in the currency of the next destination of the aircraft, as determined from flight management system data available on the aircraft. At each intermediate destination, a note dispenser is conditioned to dispense only the currency of the next destination.

    Abstract: The invention is a method for making a fungal-resistant sheet of paper or paperboard for use in building materials. The method comprises adding a hydrophobic fungicide with a solubility in water of less that 0.3 g/L at 25° C. to a paper slurry during manufacture of the paper or paperboard, and processing the paper slurry in a paper machine to create a sheet. Addition of a second process additive, especially a cationic fixative, synergistically improves the efficacy of the hydrophobic fungicide. A preferred fungicide is diiodomethyl-p-tolylsulfone.

    Abstract: Leakage flows through seals are used to cool components of a turbine downstream of the seals. At certain seal locations, the leakage flows are restricted to the extent that cooling of downstream components cannot be effected by the leakage flows. The cooling air leakage flow is augmented by extracting bleed air from different stages at different temperatures from a compressor and combining the extracted flows in an ejector to provide a flow having a temperature intermediate the temperatures of the extracted flow streams for augmenting the leakage flow to cool the component. The ejector thus uses high extraction air to entrain lower temperature extraction air to lower the ejector exit air temperature, reducing the magnitude of air required to cool the downstream component and enhancing the effectiveness of the advanced seal.
