    Abstract: Provided among other things is an electrical device comprising: a first component that is a semiconductor or an electrical conductor; a second component that is an electrical conductor; and a strong, heat stable junction there between including an intermetallic bond formed of: substantially (a) tin (Sn) or a mixture of Sn and indium (In) thereof, and (b) substantially nickel (Ni). The junction can have an electrical contact resistance that is small compared to the resistance of the electrical device.

    Abstract: A method and system comprising: an optoelectronic oscillator comprising a light generator, a modulator, and at least one optical fiber, the optoelectronic oscillator operating to send a modulated carrier signal through the optical fiber into a target area and receive the return signal; a circuit for removal of the carrier frequency operatively connected to the oscillator comprising at least one phase shifter; at least one mixer operatively connected to the at least one phase shifter; at least control circuit operatively connected the at least one mixer and the at least one phase shifter for controlling the phase shifter and operating to cancel signals other than the sideband signals; a signal processor for processing the sideband signals to detect acoustical and/or vibrational signals from the target area. The method comprises sensing vibrational and/or acoustical signals for detection of acoustical and/or vibrational signals in the target area.

    Abstract: A DC-DC power converter having a power source, a load, and a transmission line terminated at one end. A first switch is electrically connected between the power source and a second end of the transmission line and movable between an open and a closed position. A second switch is electrically connected between the second end of the transmission line and the load and is movable between an open and a closed position.     Abstract: An apparatus and method for estimation of a system having state variables representing the state of the system comprising predicting the estimate of the state variables along with the uncertainties in the state variables; observing a measurement of at least one state variable corrupted with some amount of error; updating the estimates of the state variables using a weighted average, with more weight being given to estimates with higher certainty; and providing an estimator input to update the estimates of the state variables, the estimator input operating to provide asymptotic convergence of the mean estimation error in all of the state variables in the presence of persistent excitation or disturbance that is not asymptotically decaying to zero.

    Abstract: According to embodiments, an electric field sensor having a sensor electrode is constructed of an electrically conductive material and having one or more outwardly protruding pillars. A screen electrode overlies the sensor electrode and has one or more openings which register with the one or more pillars on the sensor electrode. At least one piezoelectric actuator is connected to the screen electrode so that, when excited by a voltage signal, the piezoelectric actuator modulates the screen electrode toward and away from the sensor electrode at the frequency of the periodic voltage signal. An output circuit configured to detect a voltage, a current output, or both, between the sensor electrode and the screen electrode which is proportional in magnitude to the strength of the electric field.

    Abstract: A method of measuring superconducting critical current in persistent mode using superconducting closed loops which allow the persistent current to flow without any joints. This persistent critical current is different than traditional resistive critical current that is the upper limit of the superconducting current carrying capacity, and provides the information about the range of critical current in persistent mode that is more close to applications in MRI, SMES, and Maglev operations. The measurement can be used as a quality control method in the manufacturing process and a piece of crucial information to magnet manufacturers for the design and fabrication of magnet. The superconducting materials include the second generation superconducting wires (coated conductors) based on Rare Earth (RE) Barium Copper Oxide superconducting material (REBa2Cu3O6+x, REBCO), or any other type of superconducting wires that can be manufactured in the form of tape.
